Do you use frozen foods with your baby?
If so, what kinds (fruits, veggies?), how do you prepare them (give frozen, thaw, cook), and at what age?

Oh yeah, I have made food and frozen it and most of her veggies are frozen. We use frozen peas, broccoli, corn, carrots, etc. I would make sweet potato and freeze it, muffins, freeze them. I just defrost overnight in the fridge or in the microwave and feed it to her.
I love freezing food!

Yup we do. She eats frozen veggies cooked sometimes, in addition to other frozen foods (waffles, pancakes etc)

@mediagirl: I guess I should have specified that I meant buying food frozen. Like a bag of frozen broccoli at the store.
I should get in the habit of freezing things more like you do! Sweet potato freezes well? That's our food of the week, lol.

@cmomma17: I totally buy frozen veggies.
Are you doing purees or finger foods now?
I would take a sweet potato and mash it up when she was on purees. I would freeze the mash in little freezer containers and when they were frozen, pop them out and put them in a zip lock freezer baggie. I would have a gallon sized freezer baggie of cubes of sweet potato puree.
Once she got into finger foods, I would cube the sweet potato and freeze the cubes. The big thing is just to put them on something to freeze them first, so they don't freeze together. Like a small cookie sheet. Line them up and freeze them, then toss them into a freezer bag.

Yup. Primarily frozen peas, blueberries, and corn. She has also had some frozen waffles and I make a ton of veggie nuggets and freeze them. For the nuggets I nuke them in the microwave to defrost for less than a minute, then stick under the broiler for a couple of minutes.

@mrsjazz: ooh, do you happen to have any recipes for these veggie nuggets you speak of? Would love to try some with LO.

@mediagirl: Fingers foods. I was wondering if I could cheat and buy a bunch of different veggies frozen for him to try over the next few months.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@cmomma17: definitely! It's not cheating, it's called life!!
ETA: You should see our freezer. Bags of frozen everything that make our lives easier!

@cmomma17: It may take you a while to find the right ones . . . my problem with frozen veggies has been that even cooked they are still too firm. *sigh*

@plantains: This recipe is my favorite. The whole family loves it. It's adapted from the Weelicious cookbook: http://joythebaker.com/2012/10/broccoli-potato-nuggets/
I don't roast all the vegetables because I don't have time for all of that and this recipe is time intensive, but worth it. I've also tried this recipe with sweet potatoes, chopped kale & spinach, and a little quinoa. It's easily adaptable.

@MsLipGloss: @cmomma17: agreed. I still end up squishing some things in my fingers because I'm afraid of choking.

@mrsjazz: thank you so much, looks great! I'm looking for foods that she can hold properly because she will not let me feed her and she can't use her fork yet.

ummm I live out of my freezer. For serious. I have no time (or money) to buy fresh everything
LO's veggies are all frozen.
Her fruits are a mix..I buy frozen blueberries and mango. I'll probably buy more as we progress into winter, too.
She also eats Earth's Best frozen meatballs and chicken nuggets on occasion.
Waffles are also fair game!

@sorrycharlie: oooh, frozen mango, good call! That's my issue, the time of year. Our grocery store doesn't always have the best selection once summer ends (with the exception of local stuff like apples).

I buy frozen peas and edamame for LO. Peas are easy to microwave, and edamame requires a quick boil. I like frozen fruits to make smoothies as well.

@shinymama @yin
When are peas not a choking hazard? LO is only 6 months and mostly gumming things. I wonder when peas could be introduced.
squash / 13764 posts
I put frozen veggies in boiling water for 3-4 min, at that point they're usually soft enough for LO to mash with his gums.
@cmomma17: peas are actually really easy to squish once they're cooked, so I would cook some, squish them, and give them to him.
pineapple / 12566 posts
I do, especially during the winter months when the fresh stuff is not so fresh. My go tos are peas and spinach. When LO was very young, I would just cook them in a bit of water and then puree them. Now that he eats what we eat, he eats them however I decide to cook them.

@cmomma17: I think peas are small enough that they are *safe* to give to a younger baby.
