Has anyone ever gotten a false positive pregnancy test?

I haven't but from what I've heard you can't really have a false positive because you need to have HCG present in your body for it to register positive on a test. I could be wrong though.

I bought a cheapie test from the local drugstore and it was negative. I left it on the bathroom counter, and when I came back an hour later it was positive! My husband said I probably just let it sit too long. Went and got a digital and it said right away "Not Pregnant." It was a few months after we had our first baby and I wasn't ready to be pregnant again!

Are you trying to tell us something, Arden?
Yes, if not read correctly you can get an evap line when the test dries but otherwise positive is positive.

@Mrs. Jacks: No, not telling you anything! I'm trying to wait at least 4-5 more days before I test.
I'm just scared to death of a false positive and I wondered how common they are.

The difference between an evap line and a positive is the color of the line. An evap line will be a shadow or colorless, if it has any color to it, it is positive.
@EloiseKE: That is exactly what happened to me!

I've either had two false positives or two confirmed chemical pregnancies. Considering I had lots of symptoms, I'm thinking it was chemical pregnancy.

I have a friend's wife that did. I don't know the whole story, other then they took a test got a positive and then went to the doctor and the blood test was negative.

@EloiseKE: the same thing happened to me. It was a cheap test that I took, it was clearly negative so I threw it in the trash but about an hour later I saw that it was a faint positive. So weird. I got my period later that day so I'm pretty sure it was a faulty test or something in the trash made it change, lol.

@Arden: I swore that it was too pink to be an evap--I had even googled what evap lines looked like but it had to be since I don't think a chemical pregnancy could happen that quickly.

I heard the blue dye tests sometimes give you a false positive, or at least, are so ambiguous that they look positive when the test is just malfunctioning?
But no, I've never had anything but negatives.

Never and I have taken so many tests over the years (I was always convinced I was pregnant while I was on the pill!)

The key to the evap line, from what I've heard, is not so much the color but the timing. If it's anything past the time period on the box, it's not a positive. After the time period (10 minutes or whatever), throw it away and don't dig it out of the trash and get all excited! (I know it's tempting!!)

When I had my chemical pregnancy, I did a lot of research on "false positives'. Anyone I've ever heard of having a "false positive" either saw it well after the time period or could have easily just had a chemical pregnancy.
I got my BFP and then got my period (late) a few days later. It was a bummer at the time, but knowing that it wasn't a false positive was actually really reassuring because at least I now know that I'm ovulating and CAN get pregnant.

Never had one =) My doctor told me a line is a line unless you were taking a fertility drug. A line means HCG was detected, period. And my blood test confirmed it. It ended in miscarriage, though.
