I was chatting with my OB and mastitis came up. I said that I always worry about it because I *know* a lot of people who've had it. *Know* as in HB peeps, of course! He told me not to worry about it and that only 5% of women ever get it. Is this true?

I've had it once so far, at 4 weeks postpartum, hopefully never again!

I can think of one person I know IRL who had it, but that's because she shared it on facebook and I don't think most people would advertise it! I am scared of it as well and sure hope I don't get it. And I hope you don't get it!

No, but I had clogged ducts 3 times during the 4 month sleep regression time.

Isn't it mostly caused by waiting too long between feedings or pumping and getting engorged? That's what I was told.

Yes I had it when I was 3.5 months PP. I have also had many clogged ducts and mastitis is so much worse. I think the cause was a tank top that was too tight -- similar to wearing a wired bra. My sister also had mastitis. I think she was about 6 months PP.

Yup at 2 wks pp. it was probably due to Lo being tongue tied and nursing being very painful and therefore me not nursing him often enough, and him not being able to properly empty my breast.

@Andrea: She thinks that her pump was the issue. She was able to send it back and get a refurbished pump.

I had it at two weeks post partum. I guess it was because I got engorged after ditching breast shells and not pumping enough. It wasn't pleasant, but I was so tired and messed up post partum that I chalked it up to baby. I didn't realize I was sick until a few days into when I realized I had a temperature. I survived.
Not pleasant, but I've been sicker. -
I *think* I had it about 1.5 week pp. I had very painful/blistered/scabbed nipples due to LO's super powerful suck and developed a fever of 101. My one boob was red and warm to the touch. I went that day to my OB and he gave me an antibiotic - said it was mastitis but it had been caught early so I'd probably get better quickly, and I did. However, I told a lactation consultant about it a couple weeks later and she said that she doubted I had it... I think I did though because I NEVER get fevers outside of the flu.

Didn't have it with my first but did with my second around 7 months when I forgot to wake up to nurse him. That was when I started setting an alarm. He is finally night weaned but it took me a while to have the courage to do it. Part of the reason was also bc I had an early dental appt that next morning so I pumped rather than nursed him ( more efficient) so wasn't able to work out a clogged duct. It felt sore later that day and by the next morning I was getting chills and then fever and felt like crap all day until my husband came home with my meds. it was horrible. Worse I've ever felt. Then it took a couple of days of hot compress to work out that clogged duct. Not fun.

I had it 4 times with DD, and 2x with DS. Along with clogged ducts. I think certain people may be more prone to it?

Currently on meds for it, went to urgent care Monday!
It's not been a great time.....looking forward to getting back to normal, LO is 10w and this was the first time.

No, but I'm just getting over my first ever clogged duct. LO is 4 months. I hope I never get it though!

Yes, twice over the past 2 months. So far on cycle day 19 both times, so I'm thinking it is hormonally related for me. I noticed the clogged duct and had flu-like symptoms within a couple of hours. After about 24 hours of rest, warm compresses, and massaging, nursing, and pumping like mad, I've felt much better.
I'm formulating a plan this month so I can try to avoid it this time around. I've stopped pumping except for on work days (one day a week), but I'm going to start up again as I get closer to the target day.

I probably had it - was treated for it - just no fever. My sister also had it full blown...so did one of my NICU nurses. I think it's pretty common.

I voted yes before I saw the more than once option! I had a total of 3 times, one ending in the ER

@NYCaliMama: i thought it had to be higher than 5%! I am guessing most women my OB sees do not nurse long term. That is probably what he is seeing....

In my case, I was able to follow Kelly Mom's guidelines and didn't have to go to the doctor (knock on wood for next time). I'm sure there are plenty that resolve on their own prior to medical assistance.

@Andrea: I have no idea why I got it....didn't have an especially long stretch without nursing and wasn't pumping yet at that point. Just bad luck I suppose!

10 weeks and have been mastitis and clogged duct free!
Now that I said that, I'll probably develop one of the two tomorrow.
