My LO has definitely undone all his sleep training post vac even though I stuck to his routine as much as possible.
HE NOW SCREAMS LOUD AND LONG, but refuses to fall asleep by himself. We sleep trained and he was doing great, but now he refuses and even CIO doesn't seem to be working second time around. Thank God, he is not waking up at night. He actually is almost sleeping through the night, but getting him down has been a nightmare. Anyone else had to retrain and not been successful like us?

We didn't use CIO, but DS started putting himself to sleep by himself at about 4 months, after we swaddle weaned. Now, all of a sudden, he wants to be rocked to sleep again! Completely baffling!
I've basically decided to stop worrying about it and just let him dictate his sleep schedule. We still have a strict bedtime and sleep routines, but I'm not stressing if he wakes up every 2 hours (like he did last night) or if he sleep 11 hours straight (like the previous night) or if he decides he wants to be rocked to sleep instead of putting himself to sleep. I'm pretty sure everything I do is arbitrary and he's going to do whatever he wants anyway, lol.
Anyway, I have no advice. I've basically just given up and decided to let him figure it out on his own in his own time.

@Honeybee: Thanks for responding. I'm beginning to feel like CIO is not right for my LO. He did great the first time, but now. Maybe, I should just go with the flow like you!

@Clementine: Maybe it's not? Idk, I feel like parenting is so much trial and error.

@Clementine: Could there be something else going on, like teething or a growth spurt? If so, then you may need to wait a week or do before trying to sleep train again

I'm sort of in the same boat as @honeybee with DD dictating her sleep. From 2 months until 4 months she slept straight thru 830-630 without any wakings, then the sleep regression fpillowed by "teething" happened (all signs of teething from then until now at 7.5 months but still no teeth?!?!?!). She gets up 1-3 times a night now and needs to nurse back to sleep. I'll let her cry for a few minutes to see if she really needs me first. I've tried ignoring her to see if she will go back to her STTN but it's harder to ignore now. =|

i let the kids have a couple of days to get back into things before trying to retrain, and don't mind rocking/nursing/whatever it takes to get them down for at least a couple of days.
i'm sorry it's been so tough!

I have a friend going through this and she is baffled, they were down to a few minutes of light fussing at sleep time but now it cio isn't even working. It is driving her crazy but she hadn't figured out a solution yet. Her baby is on the brink of walking though...

@Mrs. Bee: @Cole: I actually saw my Ped today and she said often babies from 6-9 mos are very perceptive regarding their surroundings. When we went on vaca, new place, new people probably made him feel out of the loop. She said it usually takes 2 weeks to get babies back to feeling like their world as they know it is back to normal. She said to take a break from sleep training, and to make him very safe and comfortable. She said to slowly try sleep training again. I think I'm going to take a break now, and try that. Only bad thing is I'm taking him on the road with for a work trip.

@BabyBoecksMom: He's def teething and like you said that's prob not helping. I think I'm going to take a break then try to start back up again but in a very gradual way.

@littleveesmommy: our LO drooled like crazy from 3 mos and then at 6 mos finally got some teeth. I am totally in the same boat as you.

@Clementine: Awww poor baby. But it should pass pretty quickly (no more than a week?) and the sleep might even go back on its own. I keep up with the Tylenol at night and teething tablets during the day when my LO is teething to give her some relief. Good lucj!

All I can offer is my sympathy. We've had to sleep train after every single vacation, and the older he gets, the tougher it is (more stamina, more stubborn etc).

@Clementine: awww sweetie I'm so sorry to hear this :(:( I would say just try to be patient and go with the flow for awhile... it really sounds like he just needs his mommy for awhile!! My one rule with sleep-training DS was that above all, I had to trust my gut, not the "rules" or a book. You have to feel good about what you're doing as a mom and totally believe 100% that you're doing what's best. If you have reservations, don't force it. If you're feeling this isn't for him - then you shouldn't do it. Every baby is so different and has different needs.
