I'm working with Charlie on his reading, which got me thinking back on what worked for kids my age back in the day.
My mom read me Green Eggs and Ham over and over until I could sound out the words. Then I moved on to other Suess books. So I guess I used a reader to learn. Didn't do any phonics systems... didn't even know they existed until I saw some Hooked on Phonics infomercials!
How did you learn to read?

I was taught using a very basic phonics program. We plan to use All About Reading when the time comes:

I dont know lol. But i was reading when i was very young and i never went to preschool so my parents did something right!

I don't remember how I learned, but I know my younger sister learned from 'Hooked on Phonics,' do they still have that?

I don't remember, I learned English in First grade and kind of picked it all up together.

No idea. My parents said I starting reading when I was 3. I remember reading the cat in the hat to my brother in preschool! I think DS will start reading at a young age...when DH and I spell out words, he already knows what words we say AND can match words with picture in many of his books.

Naturally learned before preschool. My family is all about reading and I hope LO picks it up on his own too.

my mom always told me she never taught me to read, i just knew how one day. i'm sure that isn't the case but it's a story i like to retell so people think i'm ultra smart 
we read A TON when i was little and it gave me a love of reading i hope i can pass on to my kids someday!

My mom read a lot of books with me, and we would sound out words. I could also point to the words she said. One day when she wouldn't read to me b/c she was busy I sat down and read all of the words in order to make a full story. I guess I already knew how to read!

Phonics flash cards and BOB Books. 
Around preschool/kinder age. My mom was super hands on with our education, and by the time I was in 3rd grade she switched to homeschooling us. (Because I was in like 5th grade math etc. etc. - kids with parents involved in their education can get WAY ahead of the curve).

I have no clue! And I don't remember my parents doing anything special to try to make me love reading... Thankfully my sister & I both love to read!

@mrbee: My dad took the same approach as your mom. He'd have me read books to him and have me attempt to sound out the words based on the letters. When I didn't get it, we'd underline the word, and reread it again.

@loki: my mom tells the same story about me so I like to think it's impressive too! 
Honestly I have no clue, I think they taught me the letters of my name and my brother's name, and then one day when I was 4 (so the story goes) I was going through a tv-magazine and read the word "Dallas" out loud (same letters). From then on, my mom did everything she could to stimulate reading and I still love it!

" How to Teach Your Child toRead in 100 Easy Lessons." I was four when I finished it. Loved it! I remember really enjoying the silly stories.

Preschool or daycare maybe? I was always interested in reading, so my mom started me with bigger books early.

Both parents read to me a ton. Apparently I loved abcs and books. I don't know what all they did but I read very early.

I'm not exactly sure how or what actually worked. My parents read to me quite a bit and they had a super big (think street sign) flashcard system. I don't remember using this just finding it under my bed. At school we use phonics or sounding out words.

I'm a whole word reader. Phonics does nothing for me. You could try teaching the First 100 Fry Sight Words as whole words. Some kids (like me) do better learning sight words and then phonics.

My stepmom taught me when I was 3-4. She used phonics. I remember workbooks and flash cards.

I learned in first grade. Loved it and was in the top reading group. It's probaby why I'm not in a hurry to "teach" LO how to read or colors or other stuff. We talk to her a lot and will describe things when we play but I'm not the type to straight out teach her stuff.

I don't remember. I didn't learn English until I went to school. I remember not understanding anything the teacher said in kindergarten. That entire year was pretty much a blur. My next memory was in first grade when I can speak, read and write.
@Arden: I just got this book recently. I'm glad to hear it works. The way I was trying to teach before was not working. Both my LO and I end up getting completely frustrated.

@mrbee: I am currently reading "Reading Magic" by Mem Fox. I randomly found it at our library. Her focus is on reading aloud to children & how it prepares them for learning to read. You might find it interesting.
