i know there are lots of books out there for different age groups and with different takes on how to explain the birds and the bees -- maybe check out a few and see if there is one that you feel comfortable with? either you can just get ideas from them, or actually use one!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: Wow, what a tough question to get from your niece! What did her parents think about her question and your answer?

I have been thinking about how to answer this question, and I have no idea yet what approach to take.

I plan on waiting for the questions and answering them truthfully. I remember being 4 and asking and that's what my mom did. Makes sense to me.

I plan on telling them pretty clearly and honestly. My parents told me when I was four when I asked, and I was satisfied with the answer and not freaked out.

Because they didn't make a big deal out of it and just answered it nonchalantly like any other question, I didn't think that much of it and just crossed it off my mental list of confusing questions.

(I think the phrasing was something along the lines of
"When a man and a woman want to make a baby, they do something called having sex. It's a way of expressing their love for each other. The man's penis fits in the woman's vagina and they are connected like puzzle pieces. A sperm comes out of the man's penis and travels inside the woman to find her egg, and when they touch a baby begins to be formed. After nine months of growing into a baby, the woman gives birth and the baby comes out."

I think my answer was, "Oh ok." lol

Later when I found my parents condoms and asked what they were, it was a simple explanation.
"If a man and woman don't want to make a baby when they are having sex, the man wears this and it keeps the sperm from getting to the egg so no baby is made."

Simple, easy, and the answer satisfied me. I didn't ask for more details about sex until years later.)

@Arden: Wow, that's amazing! I hope to be like that and not how my parents were with the subject

@Arden: I had two parents with science based jobs so my explanation (at around the same age) was very similar. Just the scientific facts... Although given our Christian background I think it was tweaked slightly to when a husband and wife want to have a baby lol
