Charlie's pre-k doesn't have a refrigerator, and one ice pack doesn't keep food at safe temps until lunchtime. I'd been packing 3 ice packs but they told me it was too heavy (since he has to carry it himself to his after school program too).
So from tomorrow on I'm switching to our Pack It, which is a lunch bag that is freezable so that you don't have to put in any ice packs.
How do you pack your LO's lunch if it isn't refrigerated?

We have bento boxes that hold an ice pack. I don't pack too many vulnerable foods

Here I go sounding like an old fart... But I never had a cooler in my brown paper bag and it was all good! You know, in the dark ages when I was a kid. 
anyway my son only goes to preschool for a few hours so I don't worry.

I use the bottle ice pack from my breast pump. It isn't an elegant or particularly compact solution, but it does keep food cold until lunch. I've tested it on the beach in midsummer and it held up there too. Is the issue afternoon snack or just weight?

We use the Pack It which is really heavy when filled with food, too! DD doesn't like to carry her backpack for long. She complains it is too heavy. Hope Charlie doesn't mind carrying it!

What kinds of foods are you sending? I get that with picky eaters, you might not have a lot of choice, so it isn't easy to make substitutions. I am intrigued by the pack it!

@mamimami: i pack foods that need to be refrigerated, and he's there all day!
@honeybear: it was pretty heavy but since we carry it to school and back i didn't think it was a big issue. but he did have the biggest lunchbox there!
@Andrea: the packit is heavy when filled with food! but at least i don't have to worry about packing an ice pack.
@looch: i still pack a good variety of food because he isn't eating much at school. they give so many snacks that he is grazing instead of eating a full meal -- he just picks and chooses the best parts and then after school he says he's hungry, which he never did at daycare because they helped him eat. now he's at a big boy school and they don't help him. i know he has to grow up sometime, but i wish they didn't give them so much juice and snacks!

Lo doesn't go to school yet but I pack food for him when we plan to be out the whole day. I use this and it keep the food either really warm or really cold depending on how you use it.
