At 3 days old, the Trikester doesn't have a lot of awake time. When he is alert, we just stare at each other, or I smother him in kisses. I feel like I should being engaging in some kind of play to help encourage his development, body, reflexes, brain, etc.
Any ideas for "educational" play with a newborn?

I posted about this as well...the first few weeks are all about survival! I usually read to LO, talk to him, put him on his activity mat, or walk him around the apt.

Three days (or weeks IMHO) is far too early for such things. A baby that age is getting all the stimulation they need just looking at the world. Your love and attention is all they need in those early weeks.

My LO is just hitting six weeks and it's really only in the last week or so that she's started to interact with us rather than just lie there gazing at the world.
In terms of play we hang out with her when she's on her play gym, I sing her little songs and I chatter away non-stop about all sorts of rubbish! Prior to this I used to prop a bright book or toy up next to the changing mat and chatter away to her.

Read books, sing songs, talk to him...there's not much you can do at that age just interact with him

I just read to her a lot, sang songs, and talked to her nonstop... like when I'm changing her diaper, feeding her, putting her down for a nap. I always told her exactly what I was doing as I was doing it.

We read and sang to our LO. When he was about 2 months old we started taking him to Gymboree.

I agree with @sarac that 3 days is quite young, but I also understand as I felt the same way when my LO was a newborn! I think singing is great, and I remember hubs used to take her on a "tour" around the apartment while singing to her.

Oh man at three days I was barely surviving!! In so much pain and so tired....i will be honest and say I didn't even start reading to LO until she was two or three months old!
I have heard that doing bicycles with their legs is good exercise for them though and helps them get the gas out.

@Mrs. Tricycle: do you have an activity gym or something like that? when my LO was a newborn he loved to just lay there on it and stare at everything!

I felt so much pressure to play with Wagon Jr. when he was a newborn, especially since I was a SAHM. I'd show him black and white flashcards, dangle toys over him, read books to him, build block towers and knock them down.... seriously! This time around I realize that she's most entertained watching me do things and just by me talking to her, cooing at her, and making happy faces.

@mrs. wagon: Seriously, I hate the pressure! I have a long rant about our achievement culture of parenting, and I think that the pressure to start 'educating' and 'stimulating' their little minds starts craaaaaaazy young these days. A newborn needs warmth and food and love. End of story.

3 days? Yaaa....nursing, screaming, burping, sleeping. Thats about it. A couple of weeks old I would test his tracking, and tummy time. Now we're moving into grabbing for things, and OHMAHGOSHIWANNASEEEVERYTHING!!11!
Ps: I also talk to him in Motherese (I do it naturally, its WEIRD) and sing to him a lot.
PPS: ohh! And smiling/laughing in his face (not exactly hard to do) so he picked up on that really fast. He was smiling by 5 weeks and laughed by 6/7.

Since day 1 we've sung, chatted and read to her and out her on her activity mat and moved bright toys in front of her. She seems to track them with her eyes.

We read, talked to her, kissed every surface of her body, sang songs, attempted tummy time, etc. The first few weeks are just about bonding and getting to know each other. Talking to your baby becomes natural and second nature soon. Now it's no big deal for me to explain to her that I'm doing the dishes or the laundry and she's almost 4 months,
