Do you stay in bed with them until they fall asleep or do you leave the room and they fall asleep on their own?

For some time, we actually put Mavrick to bed, said night night, closed the light and door and he fell asleep. It was pretty sweet. Then when Sienna arrived, we had to sleep with him in bed until he fell asleep. We broke the habit, but after his hospitalization it started up again. Now, we put him to bed, close the light but leave the door WIDE open. It takes him about 15 mins and he's out. Then we close the door. I really like this option.
