LO is 14.5 months and has been going to sleep on his own since 6 months. He is now fighting naps due to dropping a nap and I don't know how to help him. Yesterday he napped 1:30-4 wth no problem. Today he screamed for half an hour at 1:30, I went in and read to him for 20 minutes and put him back down and he is screaming even harder. We don't nurse, he doesn't get bottles anymore, our nap rotund is pretty much books so I don't have a way to help him sleep!

Have you tried singing?
When my DD gets cranky and is screaming I start to sing really really soft and brush her hair with my hands (does that make sense) and she instantly calms down!

has this happened more than 1 day? if it just happened for 1 day, i'd say maybe hes teething. but if its been going on a couple days, maybe he's over tired and needs to go down alittle earlier?
i usually just rock dd, that will usually calm her down and then i put her back once shes settles back down.

He's calm as soon as I go in to get him but he won't sleep with me or anywhere but his crib. This has been happening for weeks now, I am at my wits end. Two naps days mean screaming only in the afternoon one but that tells me he's ready for one nap! One nap days are often a struggle but at least he usually falls asleep after crying a little. Today is the worst it's ever been, he has screamed himself hoarse. I am in the car right now trying for a car nap but...more screaming. He has been up since 8 and it's 3pm where I am. I don't know what to do.

No advice...I'm in the same boat! DD has woken up every 3 hours ALL. NIGHT. LONG. for the last three nights. AND she's fighting naps. She has STTN since 4 months and only sleeps in her crib, as well.
There is not enough coffee in the world.

When is the same way when it comes to being able to soothe himself. But he has his days. When mine does this, I let him talk a warm sippy cup of milk to nap time and that usually lulls him to sleep right away.

after going in once to comfort him, i let him CIO because i know there isn't much, if anything, i can do. it sucks and has led to 2-hour crying/fussing sessions, but i know now how he works.

@edelweiss: that's what I usually do too, 30 minute of hysterical shrieking was too much for me though. If he was just crying because he's mad he can't fall asleep I'd put in some earbuds and let him be but this was some next level shit.

With my kids if they are fighting sleep I just don't stress, let them be happily awake with me, and try again later. Could you try putting him down for a nap earlier? Sounds to me like he is maybe over-tired. Some kids stick with a morning nap as their only nap when they first transition: for several months Lorelei had only one nap from 10am-12pm.

I have to keep reminding myself that he isn't a machine and just because he napped great one day doesn't guarantee it the next day. This transition is the pits.

@MamaChin: that sounds tough! I'm probably not much help seeing as I still nurse to sleep at fifteen months but a few tricks spring to mind...

A relaxing rub - start with his toes, move up to his calf muscles, his knees etc

@Mamaof2: I would also suggest singing. We only sing row your boat before naps/nighttime, and I think it helps DS1 (28 months now) to realize what's going on. I did it for months before he cared enough to request it if I didn't offer, but now it's an important part of the routine (and has expanded to many more songs).
