I'm only 4 months but I've been told by a lot of people in my area that daycares here have really long wait lists - as much as 9 months! Is it way too early to start doing tours and visits or should I get started? I find this whole thing really, really stressful, and think I would feel better if I had a sense for where the baby was going to go, but I'm a little worried that I'm getting way ahead of myself.

I think we started around 30 weeks? The daycare we ended up choosing had three more openings left for the date we needed (5 months in the future)

I did at 10 weeks so I could get him into the pool for the best child care around here!

I started around 5 or 6 months. I have felt really good and excited abput the place we picked out and am glad we already picked a place and have that taken care of.

I had our LO on a waiting list when we started to TTC. I'm lucky I did because they closed the list shortly after. Daycare is crazy here despite the generous mat leave. I got on the list in march of 2012 for a January 2014 spot.
I would definitely recommend looking sooner rather than later. -

I'm 17 weeks and haven't really looked into it aside from making a list of places to look at. One of my girlfriends here said she didn't start looking until month 7 and every place had plenty of room, so I'm honestly not very concerned with it.

We locked in a spot when I was 28 weeks. They had one spot left for the infant room, and the other location we really liked didn't have an opening for 2 months after we needed it.

I am 19 weeks and going to look at a place tomorrow. I need to call a couple more. I have heard everything has wait lists in my area.

I started looking at the beginning of my second trimester. In our area there are very long waiting lists and some of the daycares we looked at were already filled when we looked. Some people put there name on the list the minute they find out they are pregnant to confirm they can get their LO in their daycare of choice. With our next LO I'm going to make sure to get them on the list right away because we LOVE our daycare.

I started looking around 6 months for part time care and it is really hard. Right now we are on a 7 - 10 month waiting list for the government run day care through DH's job (subsidized), and other than that I'm planning on contacting people once she arrives because nobody wants to hold a part time spot for 6 months!

I started calling around 3 or 4 months just to get rates and a sense of what the wait list situation was like. We started looking around 5 months and we locked down our choice when I was 23 weeks -- they already had a wait list of three people and while they had 4 spots opening between now and next April, I didn't want to chance sitting on it. I don't think it's ever too early to start looking and get a sense of the situation!

It really depends on your area I started looking in the 1st trimester but didnt get serious about it until the 3rd trimester. I was never able to make up my mind and didnt really reserve a spot for her until she was about 8 weeks old

We started exploring our options at about 18 weeks - daycare, nanny, or au pair.

I got on the waiting list at 4 months into my PREGNANCY. LO is now 6 months old and when we called they said that she will most likely NOT get in at the 1 year mark.
Now i'm scrambling to find other day care centres.
