@looch: Ha! How shameful for a finance girl!

My LO is three and a half and we are just starting to understand adding and subtracting but she needs to use her fingers for anything bigger than like 3+2=5

She's 2.5 and numbers are probably her favorite thing. She can only add and subtract if stuff is in front of her. Like she loves counting her blueberries with dinner then eating some and telling me how many there are left. And she loves when I have the weather channel on cause she'll tell me to pause it and read me all the temperatures

@looch: that is amazing! My DH is a whiz with numbers and can do so much complicated math in his head. His CFO is always amazed at his ability to calculate stuff so quickly. I need paper or a calculator. Some people are just able to do math in their head - definitely not me! But I wouldn't worry about your LO's strength with numbers - he can still develop a love of reading! He's still so young! Often it's finding the right books to capture his interest - possibly books about numbers. My DH would read things like Math Magic when he was little bc he loved numbers. He was a numbers guy for sure from a young age but he got a perfect on his verbal section of the SATs. So being a numbers focused kid won't necessarily preclude him from also being strong with reading comprehension/writing.

My LO is much stronger with reading so we'll see how numbers develop for her. She could count from an early age (consistently counting to 20 by 2 and up to 100 by 3 but still will occasionally repeat certain sequences if she's not super focused). At 4.5 she can do very simple math (different combinations adding up to 10, can count to 100 by 2s, 5s, and 10s). They do a lot of games at school to make numbers fun

@looch: i also feel like i have a math related learning disability!! my parents really tried to help me though - i had a math tutor from about 3rd grade through the end of middle school off & on -- didn't help much. Strangely I was great at Algebra and got all A's... but basic math & geometry were really difficult for me.

I also notice that my 3 year old son is really into numbers already, he's always counting and adding things up - hopefully he's got much better skillz than me! haha

She's not quite three, so I don't really expect much but she can count up to in the 20's and further (but not as accurately). She understands simple addition subtraction when using real-life objects. Like if I tell her to take 5 bites, she knows how many bites she has left after she's taken 3 bites.

I am not a math person, so I have to remind myself to take the natural opportunities that arise in life to do simple math--like the counting bites thing. Generally speaking, pointing out math concepts doesn't come as easily to me as pointing out verbal concepts.

LO can count past 100 and by 2, 5s, 10s. She adds and subtracts on her fingers mainly. She is pretty good with patterns and taught her 3D shapes and she can pretty much tell time. She does 48 piece puzzles. Not really sure where to take her next. 3s? She starts kindergarten in a month so she is pretty good with math already. Lots of great math shows out there.

I remember counting aloud with LO as I pushed her on a swing in Central Park when she was 18 months. This lady came by and totally gave me the eye, like I was trying to prove something. I could tell because she then started pushing her kid and saying something super duper crazy stuff really loud with her baby while glaring at me. I felt a bit bummed but truly this kind of thing just comes naturally. It is not forced. I was like that as a kid and wished my mom did more with me. LO seems to enjoy it too. And again what is natural for one seems pushy to another.
