The post on reading got me thinking, particularly about my own son's weaknessses and strengths. While he's not able to read at 5.5 (kindergarten in September), he's able to roll dice and add the numbers in his head without counting on his fingers. He can count by increments, 2, 5, 10, identify patterns, and is learning how to measure liquids now.

This is fascinating to me because I require a calculator to do even very simple calculations (I can't picture the numbers in my head) and even on paper, I make tons of computation errors. I was an early reader though, so I wonder how to nurture that in my uninterested child. I don't want him to be solely a "numbers guy," if that makes sense.
