I took 12 weeks with my first and I'm taking 16 weeks for baby 2. I recently asked my boss if I could go back early and he said no...business is slow in the summer!

21 1/2 weeks but only because we timed it so that my mat leave went right into summer vacation (I'm a teacher)

With #1 I was off for 14 months (the first 6 weeks were vacation and then I gave birth - I went back to work when LO was 13 months).
With #2, I will have about 11 months.
Go Canada!

@autumnlove: I would love that!
I took 12 for DD but I want to take 14 for the next one

Yeesh I'm the shortest so far I'm only able to take 8 weeks off

It'll be about 11 months bc I was off for 4 weeks before she made her appearance!

11 months since I effed up & started 4 weeks early. I should have done sick leave first but my claim got so messed up that by the end I was just happy to have it over with.

@Bookworm: I'll be shortest
With #1, I took 16 weeks and though it was hard to go back, I was pretty ready.
With #2, I only got 3 days and I had to scramble to get that! (I took a 4 week work from home hiatus in our low season several months later.

I have a year off from work, but DD was two weeks late, so really I'll have 11 months with her. I will likely tack some vacation onto the end though so that I can be home with her until the one year mark.

12 weeks of partial pay, through that state. I might take a additional 4 weeks of no pay, though. I've been receiving partial pay through the state for the last few weeks of pregnancy, too.

@oliviaoblivia: ugh. I'd kill for that!
I had 4 weeks before I started working from home part time and went back to the office at 6. Worst decision ever.

13 weeks. A math "error" got me the extra week. He he he.

With Ellie I had ten weeks. Would have been six, had it not been for needing a c-section, so in that sense I was very grateful for my birth. With Lorelei I was already at home and continued to do so. But I did stop substitute teaching and will start again when she starts preschool.

I had 6 weeks con leave and I took 2 weeks of my own leave. It was NOT long enough.

@Mrs. Jacks: wait 3 DAYS?! How did you go back to work after 3 days?! I couldn't even sit for more than a week!

@travellingbee: Ahh, the benefits of adoption. Don't get me wrong, it was a total blur, but more do-able than giving birth... Though I did feel like a million bucks once Lala was out of me that I was taking long walks and doing crazy outings 2 days post-partum.

4 weeks before and 10 weeks after. I'm so jealous of Canada!!! I would love to still be on maternity leave!!

Taking 12 but trying to convince DH that it needs to be 16. If we are frugal enough this month and next it can happen!

Originally 8 weeks but ended up getting an additional 4 weeks because I wasn't quite ready to go back!

@Mrs. Jacks: Ah that makes sense! Still hard though, just not in the same physical way.

@travellingbee: It was wrenching and if it wasn't my high season, I would have said "screw it" I'm taking the time!

Mine just started 2 weeks ago and Im taking 39 weeks. Baby is due mid August. My mat leave started early because I always finish work in June (work in schools). DH is going to take the last 11 weeks. 50 weeks total for us. I feel very, very fortunate.

8 weeks with number 1, no idea what I'll do with 2! I have 2 weeks pto if I don't use any days at all (never gonna happen with a LO) through march...any more time ill get docked pay. If I had childcare that would take less than a six week old I would just go back to work!
pomelo / 5621 posts
I have 52 weeks off. And since I stopped work 3 days before he was born I get pretty much his whole first year at home. I was supposed to have a couple weeks off before him but someone decided to come a bit early.

I get 12 weeks paid and up to an additional 8 weeks unpaid. It doesn't look like I'm going to be able to go back to work though, so I guess the additional 8 weeks doesn't really mean anything since it's unpaid.

I had 16 weeks paid leave at full salary. I could take up to one year of unpaid parental leave, but I ended up quitting to SAH.
Where I am living now in Austria by law parents have 1 year of parental leave. The mother is required to stop working 8 weeks before the due date. From what I understand, the parents can then split up the remaining 10 months between them, so for example the woman can take 9 months and the man 3. And I think it is at least at 80% salary.

7 weeks
and I was in the hospital for almost a week after giving birth.

I had 7 months at full pay and I accrued vacation days, but the governement only supports 3 months (Switzerland). I just had a generous employer and over 11 years of service.
I was required to go out 10 weeks before my due date, I had to get an exception to go out 6 weeks before.
