My baby is 8 days old and my nipples are so sore. I'm wondering how long this lasted for all you other BFing mamas out there. And have any of you tried nipple shields? I'm really starting to hate and dread our feeding sessions.
I know it shouldn't hurt, but it does. I've been to the lactation consultant. She and the hospital nurses all said her latch is good.

I had the same problem. I just toughed it out and it has gotten 100 times better. My LO is 6 weeks old and I don't even notice anymore. I guess it was maybe around 3-4 weeks for me?

12 days here and dreading it, too. the nipple shield helped me with latch but not soreness. currently not using shield, wearing gel soothies (help a little) and praying...

It stopped hurting at 2 weeks.
I was really worried that it would last forever because my nipples just hurt so bad....it even hurt when the water spray hit them in the shower!
Now at almost 3 weeks breastfeeding does not hurt at all. I do use a nipple shield though. They gave it to me in the hospital and now LO wont eat without it.

@mrsdaredevil - yep mine hurt with the shower too. And with just my bra or shirt touching them. I've been using lanolin and gel pads. Not sure if they're actually helping though.
Between the pain and her recent habit of keeping us up all night, I've been contemplating just pumping and bottle feeding.

6 weeks the first time. I didn't use a shield but I did use pain killers! I figured that was better than flinching and pulling away when she tried to latch.
Second baby? about 3 days. yay!

Around 4 weeks before tears didn't come to my eyes during the first few moments. I never used a nippleshield but I did take plenty of motrin.

It took around 6-7 weeks for mine to not be sore. But I have somewhat flat nipples.

Mine are still store--she's almost 7 weeks. They had stop being sore around 3 weeks, but she sometimes has relapses in the way she latches (no idea why) so I'm dealing with some soreness. I'm glad she doesn't understand what I'm saying yet! I'll be saying curse words and she just looks up at me with the sweetest face.

One was sore for about 1.5 weeks and the other a good 2. Lots of lanolin, breastmilk and a few days of gel pads made a world of difference!

i think mine lasted about 2 weeks or so too. but now, doesn't hurt at all. i didn't really use lanolin. but i have expressed milk and let it dry on my nipples. and yes, it hurt in the shower or when i wore clothes! actually, when my clothes brushed against my nipples.

About a month. I went on a heavy lanolin and breastmilk regimen, which helped tremendously.

I had a blistered nipple (ouch!!!) from like day 4-7 and it sucked! Used a nipple shield and lots of lanolin (actually organic version of it) and it was better. At 17 days out, my nipples are a little sore lately from increased feeding frequency but it's nothing like at first - and now they mostly just hurt when he first latches. I hope that passes soon too!

@Mrsdaredevil: ugh that's the worse! Sometimes it is still tender and I don't like the shower water hitting them.

for me it wasn't very long, maybe two weeks?
