If you bottle feed your LO, how many ounces does he/she take per feeding? I just moved my LO up to 4oz because she still seemed hungry after drinking 2 1/2 & 3 ounces. Is that too much?
She breastfeeds anywhere from 30 min-1 hour. Although I can't measure how much she drinks when we breastfeed, I imagine its a lot if she's drinking that long.
How many ounces does your 8 week old drink?

I think when she was 8 weeks she was drinking around 3oz.

@Bao: I wonder if I have her too much. She only drank 3 oz of the 4. I guess it's just trial & error.

From age 1-6 months bf babies need about 30 oz of milk a day. You can divide that by the number of feedings you have in a 24hr period to get an idea of how much your lo eats per feeding. At 1 month tummy capacity is 2.5-5oz. Bottle feeding can attribute to over eating though since lo can't control intake like with the breast so it could seem like they're hungry when its really just that their body hasn't had time to tell them they're full.

My almost 3 week old takes 4 ounces every 3-4 hours!

My LO is 18 weeks now and is still eating 3-4 Oz every two hours. It really hasn't changed much in the last 10 weeks. Every now and then she'll take 5oz.

I can't really remember, but I know that whenever she started regularly finishing the size of bottle that we were giving her at her feedings, then we would up her to a larger bottle.

Actually, from everything I've researched and discussed with my doctor, babies' needs differ and anywhere between 20-32 oz a day is normal, with the average around 24 a day.
I think my son took around 3 oz per feeding at 2 months old.

H is 5 weeks old and usually drinks 4 oz when we give her the bottle and on occasion she has taken 5oz!

@winniebee: I agree, I think the average is actually about 24 ounces of breastmilk per 24 hour period. Again, this could range from 20-30 ounces and is going to be different for formula.
When my LO started daycare at 12 weeks, we had her still on 3 ounce bottles but every two hours she was eating. I preferred to feed her more frequently rather than larger bottles to ensure she wasn't being over fed.

At 8 weeks my LO took 4oz almost every time... Every 3 hours. At 12 weeks he still eats 4oz almost every time except before bed when he takes 5-6.

We don't use bottles that often yet, but at 10 weeks he drinks at least 4 oz per bottle. I don't think he feels as satisfied at the end of a bottle feeding though. He will always act like he wants more, but when he gets more milk he sometimes spits it up. However, I recently weighed him before and after a morning nursing session at the hospital's breastfeeding group and he drank six ounces (at 9 weeks old)!

@ChelseaRose: Sometimes babies will seem unsatisfied after a bottle feeding because they want to suck more. When breastfeeding, the flow is very slow and sometimes they'll even continue sucking when no milk is coming out. This is why babies often go through more milk than a mom pumps at work because the care giver thinks the baby is still hungry, even if the baby has gotten enough milk, but just wants the soothing.

@mrs. tictactoe: It was my mom who have him the most recent bottle and I told her to distract him once he's done and he will be fine. That's exactly what happened. I pumped at the same time and produced 4.5 ounces, which was close to what he got (slightly over 4 oz).

@ChelseaRose: perfect! You can also try to feed him the bottle while he's positioned more upright so the bottle is horizontal and pace the feeding, giving frequent breaks. This might help slow the flow and help him realize he's full. Also, slowest flow nipple, no matter the age!

@mrs. tictactoe: I have yet to find a bottle/nipple that is slow enough. We have to force him to take breaks every few swallows otherwise he will end up choking himself with the milk. We've tried 5+ different types and I'm tired of buying bottles.

I see lots of babies take 4oz at 8 weeks! No one ever told me when to increase LO from 2oz, but I just know that wasn't cutting it anymore & she was still hungry. Although she's not quite at 4, she's pretty close

Mine was drinking 5 oz bottles of pumped milk at 8 weeks, which was when he started daycare.
