It depends on how much your baby eats. A good rule of thumb is at least one ounce for every hour you are away from baby. I usually am away for 9 hours, so I sent 9 oz. in the beginning. H wasn't a big drinker so she usually took 3 3oz. bottles at the beginning, then 3 4oz. bottles. When she was in a growth spurt, she would take 15 oz. per day. It went down when she was eating solids.

DS2 is 3 months and I send 4 4oz bottles to daycare. He's there from 745-530. However, he only eats 3 of those bottles (1 every 3 hours) so the 4th bottle is a just in case bottle. The 4th bottle becomes the next day's first bottle.

@avivoca: oh, ok. Thanks again for the help! I would be away from him for less than 8 hours. I do a morning pump now to build up my stash and get about 8 ounces. Should I move the morning pump to closer to when I would pump at work to get my body used to that?

I have given 3- 5 oz bottles since he started. Somedays he only takes 2 (he's 10 months now). He's in daycare from 7:30 - 5:30.

@simplyfelicity: I think with your morning pump you may be able to get away with one pump at work. How old is your baby?

@avivoca: 3 months but he will be 6 months when I go back. I know I have a lot of time...I was just trying to wrap my head around it...

@simplyfelicity: Oh wow, how nice! Well, you will probably be okay with just one pump during the day. Your supply should be well established by then. I havent' pumped in a year, but there were days that I was only able to pump once in nine hours and it was doable.

He's 4 months. I drop him off at 7:15 and he gets 4 ounce bottles at 9/12/3. DH picks him up and he eats again for me around 5/530. I send a 2 ounce frozen bag for those one off hungry days or if she spills

I did 12-16oz a day (depending on how much I pumped). I preferred to keep my freezer stash minimal and basically just pumped for the next day.
Daycare hours were typically 9-10 hours, but it was usually about 1-2 hours in between nursing the morning and the first bottle at daycare, and last bottle at daycare and nursing/dinner at home.
