Just curious how many ounces your 3 month old baby drinks from a bottle (ETA in each bottle, not over the course of the day)...I have been consistently getting about 4oz, give or take half an oz, when I pump, and I'm wondering if that is enough for DD. She sometimes drains the bottles and sometimes leaves a half oz in there. I am starting to worry if my supply is not that great, since I have a friend whose 4 month old drinks like 8oz in a bottle.

When my LO was around that age I think she was drinking around 20-25 oz? It stayed in that range until we did solid foods.

8 ounces of breastmilk?!?? That's insanity. If it's formula, it's more understandable.
My LO took 4 ounce bottles basically from one month to a year old. The only exception was the month when she was 5 months old she did take a fair amount of 5 ounce bottles because she was getting hungrier but I wanted to hold off on solids until 6 months. Once we added solids she went back to 4 ounce bottles.

My 3.5 month old is taking around 4 oz usually. Sometimes 5....his percentiles dipped a bit too so we are trying to feed him a little more.

3 months was right when my son transitioned from 4oz bottles 7 times a day to 5oz per bottle 6 times a day, give or take an ounce or two. He had all breastmilk except for 1 bottle of formula per day. He did comfort nurse, but really only for soothing when he was upset and not so much for sustenance.

My almost 6 month old chunker still only gets 4 oz a bottle, except for her night time bottle--at that one, she usually takes more like 6 oz. Or, if she nurses, she will nurse and pass out, then wake up and nurse and pass out, repeat until she probably has about 6 oz.

DD never went above 5 oz ever in breast milk. I think at 3 months she was drinking 3-4 per bottle.

My 4 month olds drink either 160 ml or 180ml so between 5-6 oz of formula.
I think a month ago, they were at 120-150 ml so 4-5 oz at each feeding.

Around 8-10 weeks, J went from taking 4 oz/bottle to 5 oz/bottle. Only now at 8.5 mo am I considering increasing the oz/bottle due to him drinking fewer bottles.

I think we did about 4 oz bottles, and 5 oz bottles starting around 4-5 months? There were occasional days where she had a 6oz night time bottle. Overall daily intake stayed around 25 oz.

Around -4 oz every 3 hours if I was away. Not 5 oz until probably 5-6 months?

@Truth Bombs: i t is breastmilk--I know it's crazy!! and the baby is not huge either, like 50th percentile. That makes me feel better, like 4oz is a very normal amount!
@hellobeeboston: yeah we went down a bit--I'm not really concerned bc same thing happened with L, and he just turned into a tall skinny kid.
@gingerbebe: she is sometimes eating 6x and sometimes 7x, which I'm sure changes the amount that she would want in each bottle.

great question as i'm leaving S for a wedding in a few weeks and then for a weekend at the end of february and she hasn't had a bottle since the NICU! i'll recommend 4 oz bottles to start!

My kids never took more than 5 oz in a bottle at a time.. Usually less and lots of wasted BM...
At 3 months-- it was about 3.5-4oz of BM per bottle. 8oz sounds like a LOT, but maybe that LO is spacing out feedings more??

My almost 3-month old takes 5 ounces, sometimes more of formula. She eats a lot during the day but is a gifted night sleeper, going 12 hours last night with one feeding at 6 am.

Ds was taking 5 5-6oz bottles. He's six months now and takes 4 or 5 6oz bottles usually if I'm at the office. (He has three solids meals too). He's 25% for weight too.

She drinks anywhere from 3-6oz, sometimes a little less but hardly ever more than 6. Usually around 4-5 per bottle, though.

DD is 11 weeks old, formula fed, and drinks 4 oz at each feed every 3 hours. Sometimes she houses it and sometimes she leaves 1/2 an ounce or more.

My son is 4 months and usually drinks 5-6 oz bottles. He has occasionally drank 8-10 oz in a siting, but that isn't typical.

DS usually drinks 3-5oz per bottle, except his night bottle which is more like 7oz. 4oz sounds just about right!

@birdofafeather: have you tried her on a bottle? I jsut fought with C this morning for 20 minutes to get her to take it
Our pedi said we should do it daily so she is used to it...so annoying to pump that often though!@mauxie: I think she is...and maybe she just gets a large part of her calories in that feeding? no idea!
@JenGirl: wow!! 10oz?! @alphagam84: in that case do you always still give 4, given that sometimes she finishes it all and sometimes leaves a bit? Or do you think you will start giving more?

@hilsy85: not yet. DH might have opportunity tomorrow but if not, then we'll probably try next week. I had no real success giving R a bottle myself until she was much older but she had no issues after the first couple with DH or other caregivers. So we'll try when I'm not in sight I think!

LO never drank more than a 4 oz bottle and after she started solids she sometimes only drank 2-3 oz at a time. And she was a fat baby! Oh, and this was breast milk or formula. We did both.

@hilsy85: I'm surprised your pedi said to give a bottle daily! That seems unnecessary if you SAH.

@daniellemybelle: yeah...there's no way I will be able to pump daily with my 3 year old running around! I guess she just thinks that a daily bottle is better so DD doesn't start refusing it. But I am going to try to do it a few times a week--LO1 never was great at taking a bottle and it was so stressful! Don't want to repeat that. Also, makes me feel better that your LO took about the same oz and was a fat baby--DD is not really chubby (around 50th percentile) but I was wondering whether that was bc she was not eating enough. Now maybe I wonder if it's genetics, because LO1 was a skinny baby as well (although I did have some weight concerns with him, but tehy were probably unfounded...).

For those who never took more than 4, how many feedings did they have? I wonder if I shoudl assume that she just gets more from me when she nurses--which I think is true earlier in the day and overnight, but probably not in the last two feednigs of the evening (around 5 and around 7)--but if she eats more earlier in the day then I guess that's ok?

@hilsy85: Our pediatrician said 4 ounces was perfect for right now and if she seemed hungry after a feeding we could try giving her an extra half an ounce to a full ounce. She hasn't seemed starving after finishing a bottle yet though. When we were giving her 3 ounces she was still hungry after a bottle so that's when we bumped her up to 4. She's not shy about letting us know if she's hungry! My friend formula feeds her son and at 8 months he still hadn't had more than 6 ounces at a time so I'm not in a rush to try and give her more since she's so young. At her 4 month appt I'm going to ask the pediatrician if we should start giving her more.

DD has taken about 5.5oz per bottle at day care since she started at 3.5 months (8 months now). I think she'd drink more if I gave it to her, but she's satisfied with the 5.5oz. Both of my kids have had insane appetites!

Ds1 always took 4oz bottles. He was always in the 70th percentile for weight. And many of the babies in his class took 6 oz+ but he never did.

DD averaged 5-5.5 oz bottles at each sitting at that age.

I'm always the outlier in posts like these... My 3 mo old takes 7-9 oz per feeding of breastmilk. All my kids have eaten like this and I fully trust that my DH who gives them bottles is not overdoing it and would stop at 4-5 oz if they were satisfied. By 7-8 mos both of my older kids were taking 10-12 oz at a feeding. And they were petite, current baby is about average.
