From some people I know I've heard of $20-$25 an hour.

I'm not a nanny but I babysit 1 little girl in my home 4 days per week. I charge $25 a day and she is with me 9 hrs. a day. My rate is the normal rate for our area.

We will negotiate a weekly rate with our nanny rather than an hourly rate. Most full time jobs break down to a pretty crappy hourly rate if you do the math. I would pay a baby sitter hourly but not a full time nanny.

@Coco Bee: We'll only be using our nanny for a few month before starting day care and will be upfront about what the hours would be and what the weekly rate will be. Anything over those hours (we work late or go in a date night) would be paid on an hourly rate. So it will be up to the nanny to decide if the weekly rate is worth the time to her. I certainly wouldn't expect a salaried nanny to just work whatever arbitrary amount of hours we decided we needed her to in a week.

ETA: I just did the math and the weekly rate we will pay / the hours we need works out to about $10 per hour which sounds about right for our area.

I should also add.. at least from families I know, they're willing to pay more $ per hour if the nanny has a degree, speaks more than one language, etc. not necessarily due to experience/length of time. Not that I think that is good or bad, but definitely apparent by reading 'wanted's on care.com

10-15 dollars an hour with 2 weeks paid vacation and 5 paid holidays.

$13-20, but most nannies I know are salaried & only get an hourly rate for overtime.

I get $12/hour for two kids. No paid holidays, vacations or anything like that.

@Coco Bee: omg! $35 a day?! Maybe she's leaving her LO to work a minimum wage job but that is super low! I saw an ad for 3 kids, $5 an hour...umm...that's nothing.

A friend of mine has been a nanny for 7 years--she makes $27 an hour. Normal rate for a lot of experience would be $20 in my area I think. If I were to get a nanny for 2 children, I wouldn't pay less than $20 for someone with a lot of experience and I would prefer a mom to watch my kiddos. I wouldn't mind the nanny to bring along their child as long as they pay equal attention to all kids and there would have to be room in their car for 3 car seats too.

ETA: $20 an hour I mean, not $20 a day!

Good to know! I just applied for a nannying job in my new city, and when they asked for accepted rate of pay, I had no clue at all.

@sorrycharlie: I hope you're getting some serious bonuses or other perks! With your Ed, I would expect you to make much more than that. Will you be taking LO with you once she arrives? I can see someone paying less if you're gonna be bringing your own with you.

@allison: I loved working overnights! My rate went down, but $10 an hour while I slept was an awesome way to wake up to an extra $100! Not so much when I did overnights for twins, because they didn't sleep through the night yet, but I made more for them ($23/hr if I remember correctly), that was HARD though!

Not sure. We're looking into hiring a part time helper/housekeeper/nanny/someone to help with food when baby 2 arrives. Will probably pay them between 15-17 depending on experience.

$10 a kid here in MI but our economy is in the crapper so I figure that # is higher elsewhere. I watched 3 kids (1 of whom was in school most the day) for $20/hour and they paid me for a 40h week even if some weeks I only worked 36h or so....because I was contracted at full time status.

@mrs. bird: well they are *super* flexible with scheduling and have given us tons in the way of christmas/birthday gifts, they came to our wedding, baby shower etc. lol.

but as far as like, bonuses or anything like that, nope! I'm sure she'll let me bring LO when she's here, but I'll probably play that by ear...& it's under the table, so it's ~$17/18 hour for a "official" job that would then deduct taxes and benefits, so that makes me feel a little better, lol.

the other thing is that I started $12/hour when the 4 y/o was only 7 weeks, and I was only 20 and halfway through undergrad. So I think they started me pretty high! It just hasn't gone up since then, but it's such a relaxed environment I'm okay with it
