Here a nanny's hourly wage is usually around $9-$10/hr, DOE. I was a nanny and made $10/hr for one kid, with 5 years nanny experience. When they had a second I got a raise.
A friend was a nanny for twins in our area and she started at $12/hr.
I suppose you could pay up to $14/hr but I've never seen anyone around here ask for that! Even though it tends to be lower here than most other places, I think our general wages are lower too. I couldn't afford a nanny at $10/hr and both DH and I work.

I don't know anyone with a nanny but I think it would probably be more than $14 because the cost of living is high around here!

We pay less than $500 USD per month. One of the HUGE perks of living in the developing world. (One of those double edged swords -- of course even as professional office people we also make less than we would in the US.)

I think around $10 an hour and up. A friend of mine was getting paid $27 with 6 years of experience. The parents were both surgeons and always gone.

In Beijing, a full time live in nanny costs around $650-$750 a month. A full time live out nanny costs around $500-$650 a month.

I live in Northern VA (right outside of DC) and when I was looking for a nanny for my two kids, the going rate was $18 to $20/hr. That equals to $810 per week (9-hour days), and ~$3240 a month!
I don't know if I just didn't look at the right places, but that was a lot of money.

We are in a nanny share - for 2 kids its $21/hr ($10.50
/hr per family) which is pretty standard here. It's a lot but we couldn't get into daycare in time for me to go back to work. Our nanny is amazing though- now we can't imagine leaving LO with anyone else. Unfotrunately we don't know how we will afford a #2!

@abmamma: that's crazy! When I got raises for the family having more kids it was only like $1/hour!! When I was FT it was an extra $50/week (working 60 hour weeks).
@Bao: I was a live in for four kids and I was given a flat weekly rate. When I figured it out it was only like $7/hour. I should have been paid more as well. But I did have room and board, use of the car, gas and groceries covered.

Here (Metro Detroit) average is $12 but it ranges mostly from $10-$14. In Philly and CT I was making around $25 plus benefits. Living outside of Detroit though is crazy cheaper than living in either of those places.

Hmm, I can't browse Care.com without setting up a user ID but that's an interesting site! I had no idea that was out there!
I am going to estimate that it would cost somewhere from $20-40, depending on number of kids. Families tend to have lots of kids in this area.

@mrspen: I know. Before she came to us, our nanny did a different nanny share that had a total of 4 kids for awhile and she was making $40/hr total!! We are also in the DC area so maybe it is a product of the area.

Bumping this thread as I am trying to figure out if a full-time nanny for 2 kids could be cheaper than full-time daycare. I glanced at Care.com and it suggests nanny's get paid $15-25 an hour which would be more than daycare.
What do you know to be the hourly rate for a nanny? We would need someone 45-50 hours a week.

She nets $15 per hour. We are in a nanny share.
The nanny share is what makes it (slightly) cheaper than daycare as I don't need as many hours as I'm technically getting coverage for with daycare.
ETA: She didn't start at $15 an hour, she actually started at $14 an hour and we gave her a $1 raise per hour after a year with us. We live in the South and I have friends who pay $12 net per hour, though. We just really love our nanny and nanny poaching is a very real thing in our area.

We paid $10, but I work from home and our nanny had no prior experience. I wasn't hovering (I was in a different space in the home), but I felt ok with this since I was close. It was a great fit.
I think a nanny with a bit more experience would likely charge $13-$16 an hour. We're in Portland, Oregon - childcare is insane here, so finding a nanny in the first place is hard work.
I did the math when we decided to put LO into a preschool. Hourly rate for school broke down to be about $7.50 an hour (we are charged monthly) vs. $10 per hour for the nanny.
We'll do a nanny for the first 12 months again, because I like the convenience of not taking my kid to and from school (that should factor into the cost), and having them at home while I'm BFing.
A nannyshare would be a GREAT ideal, if possible for you. In that case, most ask for $20 per hour, each family paying $10.

@littlejoy: Yes - I need to try to find a nanny share. I don't know much about them but it sounds like if I have 2 kids in it, I will likely need to have it at my home with another child joining unless a nanny is comfortable being responsible for 4 children.

@autumnleaves: Our nanny wasn't comfortable with more than 3 children and frankly we weren't either. I also think to find someone comfortable with that amount of children you would be looking at the $20 range. @jape14: can probably address this more as she just went through it with her nanny share.
Beyond just comfort I like that our nanny is able to take our kids to storytime, the zoo, etc. I think when you get in the arena of 4 kids you lose that opportunity.

@LBee: thanks! I agree I think when you get to 4 kids, it seems like the size of an at home daycare group of kids and there would be less opportunities for going out to the park or some place they would need to drive to.

I was paid $12/hr 10 years ago for one child. I was in college and had experience working with children. I pay my 15 year old sitter $7/hr- it's what she asked for.

We live in Northern CA but outside the SF Bay Area. $17 for one kid is considered entry level for a professional nanny per the agency we were working with. I think 2 kids with a bit more experience is in the $19-21 range.
We ended up sending DS1 to a school with a 2's program and DS2 will join him in the infant when I return to work.

@autumnleaves: I'm in NC and we are currently in a nanny share. We started out in a share with 2 kids at $15/hr, approximately (we just pay a monthly salary), so each family contributed $7.50/hr. This worked out to $1300/month which, even accounting for taxes, is slightly cheaper than infant daycare at the 5-star centers in my area. Now we have 3 kids in the share and we pay our nanny $3000/month, or roughly $17.25/hr (we have one kid and pay $1000 and the family with two pays $2000). At this rate it's definitely cheaper than daycare. Once our second kid arrives, we are dissolving the share and we are keeping the nanny at her current rate -- 4 kids is way too much to handle as @LBee: mentioned. Even though it'll be more expensive for us than daycare (we will also have our older LO in morning preschool), it's worth it for the convenience, less exposure to daycare germs, continuity in care for my older LO, etc.

I have no idea what the actual rate is but jeez if I had to pay $10 an hour that would be about $500+ a week! At that rate, me working would be pointless!

The people I know who have nannies pay 15-20 per hour. A lot of people use au pairs, they love the language/cultural aspect, costs less (although you have to think about hidden costs like possibly a car for the au pair, food) but you have to have the space for them and be willing to share your home.
