How did she make it feel like it was your daughter's fault for another kid throwing a rock at her? That would irk me more than the act itself.

We don't get much. We get some pictures and updates throughout the day of what they're working on and maybe a worksheet that he did once/week, but unless an incident report has to be filed (that goes to the state), we don't get a ton on his day unless we specifically ask.

Not a lot. But I mean as a whole. We had one incident, with heads hitting during play time and I got a call. It was quick and just to say that she bumped heads, ice was applied and she was ok and went back to play. When I picked her up that day there was no more mention of it. But I had gotten the call.

DD started preschool in Sept and I feel kind of "out of control" or like we are just floating by. We have a teacher conference coming up so I hope to get some answers there. I feel like the teacher that is there at pick up and I don't communicate well. She will say hi, DD had a great day or an awesome day and that's about it. One time she said DD had a few reminders and missed snack bc she didn't pick up and said she didn't want snack.. but later wanted it and once she told me DD didn't eat her lunch and took an hour sitting there and her yogurt had to be thrown away and that at school she won't have that much time (??).. than that her tummy hurt... (I thought well that probably explains why she didn't eat!). I feel like the info I am given isn't necessary or constructive... or really an "update"

One time dd had an activity paper in her bag that was blank, when I asked the teacher about it the next day she said "oh that probably means we moved on and she didn't finish.." ??? Not quite clear what that means... was DD goofing off? Not paying attention? Didn't know how to do it (which is what dd said when I asked at home!!)... so why isn't the teacher helping her or TEACHING her?

Anyway, as you can see I have other issues.. but I do feel that I dont' get much info and I'm trying to get used to it. As I'm pretty sure this is how it will be from here on out.

Very little info, but the director kept an open line of communication by email. The couple of times we had a problem, I was able to either walk in and talk to the teachers, or email the director to straighten the matter out. And of course it helped that DS was old enough to tell me there's a problem in the first place.

It's kind of a mix. Now that she's in the preschool class at her daycare (which is also attached to an elementary school and a grad school in education) we don't get basic caregiving updates--like I don't know what she ate for snack, how long she napped, where she went for outing. But we get daily little snippets (like 2-3 sentences) /anecdotes about a highlight and how it's related to what she's working on developmentally. I can usually chat with her teacher during drop off if something is up, but it's hectic with other kids and parents coming and going too.

We do get calls about incidents, like I got a call when she was bit and when she tripped and bumped her knee.

@MamaCate: oh the eating quickly thing we have way too many days when DS goes all day on no breakfast, just school lunch and a slice of apple. That's from 7:30 to 6 pm. If I fed my kid like that at home, he'd be taken away by CPS in no time flat, but in public school it's OK, no one is quite responsible. If you don't eat fast, you don't eat, and no one cares if you're in K.

@MamaCate: yes, we give him snack! There's supposed to be a snack break in school, and another one in afterschool, but he brings it home half the time. He says stuff like "I didn't have time to eat it" and "I kept raising my hand but no one had time to help me." We've talked to the teacher and the afterschool counselor, but it keeps happening. Ugh.

@MamaCate: That is what she meant but dd is only 3 and has a another whole year before school.... And if they don't want her taking an hour then don't give her that long. Just seems like a weird thing to "update" me about

@MamaCate: that makes sense. Dd is in prek but due to her bday she had another year. Her class is mixed though so maybe the teacher thought in the moment she was going to k in fall

My son was in a private preschool, it wasn't a daycare in that it didn't have children all day. We got detailed reports of incidents, particularly if there was a nurse visit involved.

@Madison43: we are in a daycare center so pickup is a rolling event, not all at once. If everyone was picked up at the same time I would not expect to get info. But if I pick up at 4:30 and they are open until 6, there is usually time to do a quick check in.

@Foodnerd81: for what it is worth our K has an app for communication with parents and I feel like I know more about what they are doing day to day some weeks now compared to last year.

We moved at the beginning of the school year and my daughter (4 this month) is now in pre-school. So far, we haven't heard anything about behavior at all. The teacher is very accessible by email though, she emails parents every Friday to talk about what the kids have been doing, and every Friday she sends home a binder with the week's song or activity and sometimes asks us to add items like photos or drawings. At the end of every month, a binder comes home with an assessment of what DD has been working on that month, and it has photos of her doing the activities, along with a color-coded grading system for skills for a particular activity. I should also add that my DD takes the bus to and from school every day, so I've only met the teacher once in person at a school event. It is logistically very difficult to go to the school, so I wouldn't ever go unless there is an emergency or a planned event.
