None. I mean, I'm sure that the values and interests she develops as a result of having me as a mom will influence her choice. But when she is deciding on and picking a major I will be nothing but supportive and encouraging. She can figure things out for herself.

I can honestly say none. We don't plan on paying for our LO's college. I know for a fact we won't have the means to do that. So since it will be their own money paying for tuition, they will be able to pick whatever they want!!

I don't have a say. However I will be honest about what types of degrees might be more worthwhile based on job market and opportunities. Some degrees sound totally awesome on paper, and when you graduate you realize you can't do much with it.

And we aren't paying for her college - at least, not all of it.

I personally think a liberal arts education is about more than the major. It's about developing higher level abilities to critique, question, and analyze. I majored in cultural studies. I worked in domestic violence services for a year and a half, and then went on to graduate school for a masters in social work. I want my child to do what makes her happy, and to find her passion. I have debt and will never make a ton of money from my chosen career path, but finding my passion helped me learn more about myself. And I can't put a price on that.

All that said, I will probably encourage my kids to explore our state university for the benefit of instate tuition. I wouldn't force her to go there, but will encourage her to weigh that option heavily.

It's all up to her. I don't want to influence her, but I'll definitely advise her on what's currently marketable and get her thinking more long term.

We don’t have a say, although there will definitely be open conversations about return on investment and what loans will cost her and for how long.

I find that people are most successful when they are doing things they actually are passionate about and interested in; so I don’t think it would be a long-term success strategy to push LO into something just because I felt it was useful/economically advantageous/etc.

It’s so hard to say what degrees lead to what jobs (outside of the totally applicable ones, like accounting or engineering). Law schools love philosophy majors and many employers love English majors because so many people cannot write or critically think these days. For me personally, the broad skills I picked up in college (critical/analytical thinking, writing, communication, etc.) have been much more useful in employment than me having my degree in X over a degree in Y.

Nada. I won't be paying either...we simply don't have that much money. He will earn a scholarship or find a way to pay himself like I did. So he can choose whatever he wants.

Very, very little. I want my daughter to do what she wants to do. DH and I have agreed to pay for 4 years of college (in state tuition only ), and she can pursue whatever degree she wants.

Ill give my advice if she wants it, but the choice is hers. The degree doesnt matter to me, just the diploma

None! She can pick whatever she wants but we will have some control over the school, in the sense that we aren't paying $$$ to go to a school that specializes in medicine, more so, and she wants to be a teacher.

@MsLipGloss: I dislike the LSAT test myself, but the law school I attended was pretty clear that they favored "soft" majors (English, philosophy, etc.) because those are majors where you learn to think through issues critically and read/write well. Heard this repeated from law professors, but maybe my experience was outside the norm? I don't know how that correlates to LSAT success - the top LSAT scorers I know are all history majors! Either way, I think law school is a good example because you don't have to major in "law" to go to law school, you can major in all sorts of majors usually thrown under the bus as useless and still enter a financially-prosperous (well, that's another topic!) and respected field.

In hindsight for my own life, I wish someone had encouraged me to get a more "practical" four year degree, and had talked me out of law school. Whether I would have listened is another story.

For LO I kind of hate the idea of pushing a specific program on her if it's not what she wants, but I'd love for her to select something like nursing or engineering that has a more defined career path, rather than end up waitressing with a liberal arts degree for years like I did.

Probably other than really really pushing that she NOT go to law school, I won't try to make the decision for her.

I want them to be happy but I also don't want them to be stressed out when they can't find jobs after college because they chose a unique major.

Not much unless I am footing the bill. Even then, I am more concerned about how well they are doing in school- grades, interneships, and seizing the opportunity. You can be successful xat anything.

Technically none. We want our kids to be able to persue their dream. However, it is something that we'll definitely discuss - we want to make sure they're realistic in what they'll receive out of said degree.

@yoursilverlining: I had an awesome LSAT score (as a history major), but I was the exception to the rule out of every one of my friends . . . Hard science curriculums teach you to process facts within an established framework (an experiment of sorts, like how the elements for torts/property rules/rational basis applications,, etc., create(s) a framework within which to analyze the facts presented in an essay question) which makes for a much cleaner/straight forward application of law to facts in a written exam format . . . which is the best way to get top grades in law school. It has been my experience that writing ability doesn't matter until after you become an attorney . . .

But who knows for sure . . . law school is so stinkin' subjective (*shakesfist*)! But a big YES to everything else!!
