For reference, I pay a college educated sitter $12 hour, even if E is sleeping!

I think it depends on area/location, but I think 10/hour for a sleeping child is good. That's way more than minimum wage! In our location, 8/hour is pretty standard.

$10 an hour for a teacher who works at her daycare. She charges what she gets paid there.

@MrsTiger: I'm outside Boston, but in MA. I'm an adult, but I get $10/hr for overnights while I'm asleep & my regular rate during awake hours whether the kids are awake or not. So 8x$10 for the night while I sleep (& hopefully the kids do too! When I did overnights with newborn wake ups I made more than my normal daytime rate), plus regular rate the rest of the hours.

I pay $15/hour for the same deal, on Saturdays. Our babysitters are young adults and I love them, so I am happy to pay a bit more. But fwiw, where I am babysitters run $15-20/hour.

I made $10/hr (although they charge 12 now) in college, working for an upscale agency. lol.

I paid my girl in England $5/hr. She was like 14 though, and her mom used to come with her.

I pay the same whether the baby is asleep or awake because I do think it's more about paying them for their time.

@MamaMoose: totally agree. I used to do quite a lot of baby sitting and was always paid the same rate whether it was during the day or at night.

As for the rate, it depends on where you live. When we lived in NYC, I paid $15/hour day or night.

We haven't used babysitters yet but I would pay the same amount you'd pay if your child was awake. I'm thinking we'd pay $15-20 per hour around here depending on age/experience.
