I agree with checking care.com/sittercity. I would also have a number in mind and ask her what she feels is fair. That has worked for us with the two nannies we've hired. We pay ours under the table (her request) so I would ask that as well, unless you want to be able to write it off.

ETA: as for the list, I would write down everything you might want her to know about LO (food, naps, allergies, schedule), where important things are (diapers, wipes), important contact information. Things like that. We have a notebook we use with our nanny and I made a packet of info like I listed above. It's helpful to have if you ever use a new babysitter too.

We use our nanny about 15-20 hours a week and pay her $10. I also work from home. We live in Orlando, FL. We gave her the option of paying cash or "official" and she chose cash. There are tax incentives (like some employers will allow you to set aside a certain amount for child care tax free but then obviously you have to have child care payments "on the books") but then also taxes get taken out. Cash was easier for both of us.

We started off pre-interview by saying our pay. Since your situation is a little different I would just sit down and say that you were planning to pay XX amount (what you think is fair after discussing on HB) and say that since you hadn't discussed that you wanted to just make sure that was in line with her expectations. Be prepared for her to potentially want more though- it would be fair for her to say "I was actually thinking that XX would be a fair hourly rate" and you may have to negotiate a bit.

I suggest paying her on the books - if she claims the money on her income tax form you can run into lots of trouble.

Nannys in our area (SW Ohio) wanted around $20/hr which is more than I make a day. Typically if you want to claim for tax purposes you would pay a little more because they too will need to claim it.

I worked for an agency. I made $10/hr when I did it on a temporary basis (basically, babysitting) and the part-time and full-time girls started at $15/hr. This was the St Louis area.
