Curious about this. My kiddos have been incredibly sick this fall....they are both getting tubes for constant ear infections, so I am hoping things are going to be better soon! Curious what is the norm for other families!

Daycare kid here and I think she was home one day in the last six months.

3 mo into daycare (LO is almost 14 mo) and has missed an average of 2 days per month, though only goes 3 days per week. It's rough! I suppose only twice were those full days and the rest half (went home with a fever). Still!

Ds1 goes to preschool/daycare. Now I hardly ever keep him home - maybe 3 times a year? At first he was home maybe once every two months?

DD has missed one day of preschool since September, even then, it was just a viral rash that wasn't contagious.

At least once a month so far from 3 half day a week preschool. Those 3 days are enough for her to catch all the things going around.

He is 3.5 and in a home-daycare. He started there in August and so far (knock on wood), he hasn't had to stay home yet!

Lo has been in daycare over a year and I've never had to keep her home. Once I picked her up early bc she had like a 99 fever

For those whose kids haven't been out..does that mean you send them if they have a cold too? I try to keep dd out during the most contagious days when her nose is running a lot because that's what the director mentioned when we started. If I kept her out the whole cold long she'd barely be there because she might have a runny nose just in the mornings for awhile after most of the symptoms are gone. Does it make a difference whether it's preschool or an infant and up daycare center?

@2littlepumpkins: I send him unless he has fever or diarrhea. Otherwise he'd never go to school.

@2littlepumpkins: I only keep him home when he has a fever or throwing up/diarrhea. He's had a couple fevers this year that were low and happened to fall on the weekend so that was lucky. I haven't missed any work this school year so far, which is good because I need my days for Mat leave!

@Mrs. Lion: our first year, before tubes, LO was sick constantly and home with fever multiple times a month. It was horrible. tubes made all the difference!

Never. DS is 2, and has been in daycare full time since he was 10 months.

DD is in preschool. She almost missed a day a few weeks ago but over night her stuffy nose and cough disappeared. If DS was in school it would be 3+ times a month.

I don't remember the last time we had to keep her home.

Wow you all are so lucky! Tell me your magical well baby tips! LO has gotten a fever with each new cold, once a month so far. I had been telling myself it was normal new daycare stuff but now I'm not so sure...

@MenagerieMama: how old is your child?
When I started my son in a center over a year ago, he got sick a few times a month. He was 2.5 at the time, so he already had a bit of an immune system built up. He's in a home daycare now and I think it's less exposure to germs.

@MenagerieMama: My LO is the same age as yours. I feel like she gets a cold at least once a month but she doesn't usually get a fever with it.

@MenagerieMama: The trick is being in daycare for over a year. The first year was awful for us but it gets better. It's also way worse if your kid gets secondary infections like earaches or pneumonia which cause fevers (automatic out) instead of just the initial cold that frequently doesn't cause a fever.
The first year was bad. I think LO had two bouts of 5 day pneumonia fevers and many many earaches. Now that she's 2.5 she hasn't been out in 8 months or so. LO2, 5 months, has been in daycare 2.5 weeks and hasn't missed yet but he has had 2 colds.

Since January, they were both home 2 days in a row together and then DD was home one day last week by herself.

Um....all the time over here. We have fevers over some issue pretty much every month. My daughter is 2 and has had 3 ear infections, 3 bouts of strep (all in the last 6 months), hfm, bad colds with coughs. The list goes on...,

I think it decreases as the kids get older, especially when they stop putting things in their mouths.

The first year (4-16 months) it was constant. DS got everything and we in turn were sick all the time, too. He's almost three now and he's had two illnesses with fever over the past 1.5 years.
(Ducking out of this thread now as I'm afraid I'll jinx it by mentioning it...)

Unless he's having a fever that didn't go away or is vomiting/having diarrhea, I take him. He hardly stays home, although he did stay home plenty during his infant months with RSV, flu, etc. and we couldn't give him anything to fight it.

He started preschool after Labor Day (3x a week) and I've kept him home twice. He had a fever both times.

The first half of this year, she was out 1-2 times per month (including summer). I swear she got every bug under the sun (flu, norovirus, HFM, roseola). Magically, she hasn't been out since July. I'm hoping her immune system is finally kicking in now at age 2.

I want to say other. When she was 0-2.5, she was sick ALL THE TIME. Like 2 weeks out of the month. Now that she is with kids (she's a daycare kid) who don't put everything in their mouths, she is no where near as sick as often or for as long a period of time.

DD started daycare in Oct and already stayed home pretty much 1 whole week with stomach bug!
