DS is almost 18.5 months old and has been watched by mom since I went back to work. We are looking into a few pt/ montessori programs (830-1130) near our home this summer to enroll him in Aug/Sept.
How old was your LO and how was the transition?

D went 2 days a week when he was 2. He went to full day preschool right after turning 3.
Eta: whoops. He didn't go to Montessori. I don't know how I missed that in the question lol. Skip me.

My advice would be to wait another school year. We put our child in Montessori around your son's age, but I don't think I will do it for subsequent kids. I don't think there is any harm in it, but there are still lots of tantrums at that age and the Montessori philosophy for napping is that they nap when they are tired if they opt to and there is no set nap time. My kids NEED naps at that young age and they just seemed overtired and unnecessarily cranky. I think until 2.5 kids aren't really playing with other kids and the verbal skills are lacking leading to frustration. If you have the option, I would just beef up on extra activities next year, give them extra attention at home and start Montessori next year.

My LO is 27 months - we probably won't send her to a preschool program until she's at least 3 years old.

DD was 15 months went she went from being watched by my MIL to going to DCP.
I felt she was getting too active for my MIL to handle and that she needed some guided activities and social interaction during the day.
Drop offs were rough for 3 weeks but the school day went really well from Day 1.

We plan on starting at 3 for a 3 day program the same hours as you mentioned.

We are a gramma care family too and DS will likely stay with her until he starts pre-k at around age 3. She also watches my nephew though in the afternoons so he gets social interaction and learns by playing with his bigger cousin!

We will be starting a similar schedule a couple months after he turns 3.

Charlie never went to preschool. He was in daycare until he started public pre-k at 3 3/4.
Olive will be starting a full-time preschool in the fall when she's almost 3. She's currently in a daycare.

We put LO in preschool shortly after he turned 2 (summer birthday). Even though he was one of the younger kids he has thrived! Two things that helped are that he was a) mostly potty trained, and b) had a language explosion a few months before. Also we just knew that he was ready and it has been really great for us as a family. I really hope we can find a good place for him after we move!

At that age, if you can transition him to an afternoon only nap, I don't see what the downside would be.

Noelle went at 20 months, Jaren's first day was yesterday at 16 months.
