DH and I will probably start TTC in about a year. For those of you that planned your pregnancy, how soon before you started TTC did you start taking prenatals?

I started taking them as soon as I went off birth control, and was pregnant 5 months later.

I didn't. Baby was a surprise. It really wasn't a problem, though, because DH and I eat a very nutritious diet. I still prefer to get my vitamins from food instead of a supplement...I'm not very good about taking the prenatals!

I never took prenatals, just a folic acid supplement. Much easier to swallow and less chance of me not taking it because of gagging.

I've been taking a woman's multivitamin for over a year before TTC. I asked my doctor and she said that as long as it has at least 400 mcg of folic acid, that was fine and I could start prenatals when we start actually trying, or when I get pregnant. I also just started taking a B complex, which has folic acid as well, so I'm getting plenty.
I'll probably start prenatals when this bottle of multi vitamins is finished or I'm pregnant, whichever comes first.

I started when I went off the pill but wasn't super diligent. We started trying about 6 months after that.

I just switched from a womens daily multi vitamin to a prenatal when the bottle ran out...maybe six months before TTC.

i went off the pill about 3 weeks ago and i started taking women's daily and a folic acid supplement (400mcg) even though my multi already has 400mcg of folic acid in it, i just figured i'd supplement it more. should i be taking prenatals? We aren't going to actively TTC for another 2 months or so.

I think I started about 2 months before TTC. The biggest thing you want to be taking is folic acid. I think starting to take it at least 1 month before you start TTC will give you the most benefit.

I had actually been taking prenatal vitamins for over a year before TTC. I switched over to a prenatal from a regular multivitamin (under the care of my OB) and just kept taking it, even when I was still on the pill. About 3 months before we conceived, I started taking a new prenatal with DHA.

We started ttu in sept 2011, found out I was pg in jan 12 @ 9 weeks! I bought prenatals that day...in hindsight I should have started taking as soon as we start trying.

Thank you for all the replies! My doctor suggested that I start taking them 6-8 months before TTC, and that seemed like such a long time before TTC! But based on some of your responses, it doesn't seem that crazy.

I told my gyno/OB in February that we were going to ttc starting in June and he gave me a prescription for pre-natals, so I started about 4 months before...

I took prenatals for about 3 months prior to TTC, and then got pregnant after another 2 months.

Honestly, I've been switching prenatals and multivitamins since high school. Whenever my hair started looking dull I would switch to prenatals for a while. They can't hurt you!

I started 2 months prior to TTC to allow my body to absorb and build up a good amount of the vitamins in my system.

I started taking them in January and we started TTC mid April. But I mostly started that early cause I needed a new bottle of multi-vitamins, so I figured why not?

I started in December, but I was SO bad about taking them! I was rarely taking them and then about 2 weeks before we got our BFP I started taking them daily because I knew we'd timed things well and didn't want to risk starting "too late." Even though I knew technically I did.

I started taking them about 2 months before TTC. If you've been on the pill for a long time (I was), then your body is going to be pretty depleted of folic acid, so it's somewhat important to start taking folic acid supplements nice and early.

I started after I went off birth control, as well. I was on them for 4 months before we got pregnant.

i've taken them on and off for the past couple years. when my nails get yucky or when i'm trying to grow my hair out, i took them even before TTC was on the horizon =)
i have been forgetting frequently (still TTC), but i have an abnormally high folate level and i have to have injections for the only vitamin i'm deficient in, so i don't worry too much about the prenatal vitamins in addition to my shots.

I have been taking them for years and I am not TTC yet. They are the recommended MVI for women of childbearing age.

3 months. My doc said it's especially important that you have a supply of folic acid in you system prior to pregnancy. He recommended 3 months, so that what's I did. Then I got PG on my third cycle of TTC.

i started my prenatals 8 months before ttc. they say it's actually best to start up to a year prior if you can. they are really good for you and make your hair and nails grow super fast and strong as a nice plus.

I started taking them in December and we started TTC in February, so about 2 months.

I started taking them when we started trying. I'm not very religious about it.

3 months, but I was on a multi-vitamin before then. My PCP told me to add folate and DHA supplements.

My doctor told me to get on a multi-vitamin about 3-6 months before I plan to TTC. Then 3 months before, I switched to a pre-natal vitamin. Both were gummies so they were easier to take then the pills.

My doc said to take folic acid and also be off my pill for 3 cycles before trying.
I got impatient and I think we started trying after 2 months (which was less than 2 cycles) but wouldn't you know that we got pregnant exactly after 3 cycles. My body likes to play by the rules.

I started before my wedding (about 3 months) because we knew we would be loosening up the layers of protection after the wedding.

Our dr said 6 months before so I started in Jan expecting to get pregnant this summer. Got pregnant in April, miscarried, and have continued taking them.

My GYN said the same thing @Foodnerd81's did. I just was in for my annual and told her we were probably going to start TTC in about 6 months (so before my next annual) and asked what I should do - she just said start taking a multivitamin with at least 400mg of folic acid and that is enough until I actually get pregnant. So I am just doing the One A Day Women's for now.

I started taking prenatal vitamins 6 months before. But I was taking regular vitamins every day before that.
