If you have a friend of family member watch your LO for free on a regular basis - how do you thank them? Since I went back to work this week, my mom comes over to watch DD and of course she refuses any sort of payment. I thank her profusely, but I still feel like I should be doing something for her!

When LO1 arrived my mom came to live with us for almost 3 months. At the end of her stay we gave her a red envelope to show our appreciation. I plan to do the same this time when she goes home.
She'll also be here for her birthday this year so we'll probably take her out to a really nice dinner. And maybe on the weekend up to Toronto for the day/weekend so she can visit with her sisters!

@fussygal: I offer to buy her favorite snacks/candy/tea (she sometimes refuses). We thank her profusely. We are very very flexible and easy going when she needs to cancel/reschedule/take a break. And I write really really nice things in Christmas and birthday cards about how important she is to us, etc. She honestly gets so much satisfaction out of spending time with LO though. And this week he started saying "Grandma"
OMG that's all the payment she'll ever need!

For Grandma, I'd do photo books of LO. They take some time to put together and the really nice ones can be pricey, but they're hands-down the favorite gift of the grandparents I know.

@fussygal: she is seriously over the moon. It's pretty cute. And the first day she heard him say it, LO also cried when she left at the end of the day. So I text her a lot with updates like that "LO misses you, he had so much fun with you, he loves you so much, etc." I know it makes her feel really good.

I've been wondering the same thing! My parents and my in-laws both watch my daughter during the week. So far, at Christmas, we got them each a gift card to a restaurant they love from our daughter in addition to the gifts we would have gotten them anyway.
Grandparents' Day is coming up on 9/7 - maybe a gift for that?
I know part of the reason my parents and in-laws watch her is to help us financially, so it seems like it's defeating the purpose to buy them expensive gifts. I would love to hear what other people do!

My MIL watches DS2 2 days a week and helps with DS1 a ton. I try to go over the top with birthday/mother's day gifts, and if I'm out at the store and see something she'd like I get it for her.

My mom watches my LO 1-2 days a week for me when I go to work and also refuses payment. We buy her a movie and dinner gift certificate and give it to her in a thank you card from her grandson once a month
Walmart sells a combo for $50 ($25 for dinner someplace and $25 for the AMC theater).

So my MIL watches my niece and nephew every friday for the past 5-7 years....and SIL takes her on vacation regularly!

I get my dad a gas card. He drives 45 minutes to watch DS twice a week...the least I can do is pay for his gas!
