My best friend has struggled with infertility. She conceived her first child through IVF and was trying for number 2. She just found out that she's not pregnant and I'm heartbroken for her. I don't know what to do. They will not be able to do another round financially. How can I be supportive while respecting her space and giving her time to grieve?

I'm so sorry to hear your friend is going through this. Everyone copes differently but I would guess she might be having a hard time staying motivated to keep up her routine while she grieves. Do you think she might find it helpful if you brought her some food? Or she might like some kind of self-care over the next couple weeks, like a massage or even just a couple pampering products, because IVF takes such a toll on one's body.

I agree w @spaniellove. Ivf is hard on the body. Something like spa treatments would be nice. Sorry she's going thru it....

I agree with the above and offering to watch her lo during. I would also say that you love her and are there to talk if she ever needs to.

Having just had this experience, I really appreciate it when my friends simply say "I am so sorry you are going through this...I am here for you." And also make an effort to invite me to dinner, etc. in a non-pressuring manner. She might need distractions, or she might prefer to be alone, but, regardless, it is nice to have someone extend the invitation.

I came back to find this thread today because a family friend just had a failed IVF. It was the same situation as @mrs. 64: where she had her first with support and was trying for her second with IVF. They will probably not be able to afford another round.

@T.H.O.U.: Here's my update: I let my friend know that I was there to talk to her anytime. Since we work together we see each other every day. I was basically just there to listen to whatever she was thinking about or talk about other things to get get her mind off of things for a minute. I also don't ask questions about their next step or possibly not having anymore children unless she brings it up. It is still really hard for her if course, but I hope I've helped a little. Good luck supporting your friend.
I agree with the others. Just let her know you're there for her.
