Were you able to have baby on your chest to try breastfeeding right away?

They found meconium in my amniotic fluid, so when he was born they placed him on my chest but then whisked him away to make sure he hadn't aspirated any. They were able to determine right away that he hadn't and then I got the chance to try latching right away.

Nope. C had aspirated meconium and had to go to NICU to have his lungs pumped (I think that's the term). I only saw him briefly before they took him and DH went with him. We first tried nursing maybe 2-3 hours after he was born and he didn't skip a beat!

Yup, he was on my chest immediately and we started breastfeeding maybe 10-20 min after he was born? I think? maybe it was 30 min...I don't remember the timeline of events lol.

They found meconium in my water too, but she came out screaming so they put her on my chest right away and stayed like that for a long time. I'm not sure why they didn't need to do more to check but she stayed for a while before they did the weighing and stuff. We tried latching in the delivery room and she latched right on.

@hilsy85: Yeah I kind of have no idea on how long things took. My view of the time and DH's are totally different.

Nope. I had a csection and was violently shaking from the anesthetic. We did skin-to-skin and attempted to get her to latch as soon as I got into recovery though. Probably about 45 minutes after she was born.

Baby had aspirated miconium and was purple and limp....so they had to take her away quickly. I held her about 5 minutes later, I think? I've had no problems breastfeeding.
persimmon / 1304 posts
Yep. Once she was weighed, measured and dried off, they brought her to me for skin to skin and she latched right on.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
Nope - unplanned csection and my uterus would "not clamp" and I lost a lot of blood (almost needed a transfusion) but once we got into recovery i was to do skin-skin and she latched right away and nursed for a LONG time on both sides.

@maybebaby: same thing happened with R...so nope, no immediate skin-to-skin.
squash / 13764 posts
@Foodnerd81: ha yeah, like how I thought I only waited for an epi for like 10 min and he told me, "Ummm no you were screaming bloody murder for like 45 min".

No, I had a C-section and while they said they'd bring him to me right away, it was more like 4 hours. I'm still annoyed about it. However, I was still able to breastfeed.
kiwi / 603 posts
Yes. We had delayed cord clamping so she was on my chest for a good 45+ minutes and was able to feed before I handed her off so I could get stitches.
cantaloupe / 6397 posts
Yes, we did skin-to-skin immediately... she didn't latch right away but I have no idea when she did... it's all blurry haha.

Yep, immediately. They held off on doing the weight and measurements until later. We let her find the breast and latch instinctively. It was amazing to watch!

Nope. She came out blue and not breathing with suspected meconium aspiration and had to be transferred to NICU immediately. I think I had a chance to breastfeed her maybe four hours later? I'm a bit fuzzy on the details. She was on an oxygen canula for a fair while and I wasn't able to nurse much through that. But she latched and breastfed like a champ once she was transferred to my room.

I did with first lo but had a c-section for lo #2 so no immediate skin to skin. Breastfeeding went fine both times

Yep, immediately after he was born, he was placed on my chest. I think it took maybe 30min - 1 hour to get him to latch but he finally did. Then I wouldn't give him up! I think we needed up doing skin to skin for like 2 hours. The nurse was annoyed with me because she wanted to hurry and get his measurements.

They let me hold him for a few seconds and then took him to towel off/measurements/APGARs while they stopped my hemorrhaging and stitched me up, and then they gave him to D, who gave him to me. It was probably 10-15 minutes before he came back to me for skin-to-skin, and he latched within a minute or two later.

Nope. I had a csection. But, when they brought her to me, we did skin to skin and she latched right way.
honeydew / 7909 posts
Nope! I had an unscheduled c section and he was whisked away due to breathing problems. I saw him a couple hours later and then they took him away from me again.

Yes. We had skin to skin for an hour. She latched on and nursed after about 10-15 minutes.
nectarine / 2994 posts
Yes we had immediate skin to skin which lasted about 1.5 hours and she latched about 10-15 minutes after being born.
pomelo / 5678 posts
Yes! It was in my birthplan but also standard at the hospital for them to hand you the baby immediately. It was the best moment of my life!
grapefruit / 4819 posts
Yes, she was immediately placed on my chest (weighing, cleaning and all that stuff came later) and stayed there for more than an hour. She wasn't too interested in feeding though but we had no problems breastfeeding at all.
pomegranate / 3393 posts
Not immediately, they cleaned & swaddled him first, but within a few minutes. He was not interested in nursing right away, though!
honeydew / 7811 posts
LO had fluid in his lungs so they had to take care of that first (but still in the same room as us). We breastfeed within the first hour though!
clementine / 825 posts
Yes we did delayed cord clamping and she was put on my chest right after it was cut (cord was too short to reach my chest). She latched pretty quickly.
kiwi / 635 posts
Immediate skin to skin following an unmedicated birth...but she was too tired and had zero interest.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
Nope. They wrapped her up before I held her. It was like an hour later before we tried to nurse.
persimmon / 1101 posts
I was able to pull her out, and immediately put her on my chest myself! It was so sweet and we snuggled for about an hour, but it's all such a blur now...I honestly can't remember if she latched or not.
coconut / 8483 posts
pending no problems, my midwife says they do skin to skin for a couple hours before weighing and taking measurements and such! I might get them to weigh him quick though - I will be curious

With DS1, I had a csection. We were able to try about 30-45 minutes after his birth (he was only BF for 3 weeks). DS2 was a preemie and went straight to the NICU. He was several days old before we were able to try latching. He's 4.5 months old and we're still going.
pomegranate / 3983 posts
With my first- emergency c-section and they took him away for the 4 longest hours of my life...that (amongst other things) made our BF journey very rocky to begin with. My second was a VBAC and we had skin to skin right away. Surprisingly he wasn't too interested in BF right then but he latched on once we were in our room maybe an hour later or so.
pineapple / 12053 posts
yep, right away, but from my memory, she didn't latch for a bit.
