Did you skip cereals and go straight to purées? At what age? I did cereals with DS at 4 months, and then purées at 5 but dd has been ebf and is now 6 months, so I'm figuring out what direction I want to go.

We did oatmeal mixed with breastmilk first. The ped said it would be gentler on her stomach. She liked it! I think we started purees a couple of weeks later.

We skipped both and started with slightly mashed avocado, sweet potato fries, bananas, and grilled chicken strips. We slowly introduced whatever we were eating blw style.

@Mrs. Lion: same- skipped purees and cereals and went straight to soft finger foods (sweet potato wedges, avocado, squash). I didn't see any need for cereal and she took to it right away.

We started solids at one week shy of 6 months. We started with purees then slowly went chunkier. By 7.5 months we were BLW.
I skipped cereals and when I did do "cereals" later on it was grounded steel cut oats.

We skipped cereal and purées and went straight for BLW at 6 months. She loved it!

We did cereal at 4 months, but it gave her stomach problems, so we stopped. When we started again at 6 months, we skipped cereals and went straight to purees...closely followed by BLW.

We just started LO on purées a week ago. Skipped cereals altogether.

We skipped cereal. The first meal we gave her was mashed avocado, and then pureed sweet potato and mashed banana. Then we did baby led weaning after that, so she just ate everything we ate.

We started at 6.5 months with avocado chunks and banana. At 7.5 months, I started to give him oatmeal mixed with banana or squash once a day, but mixed thick enough he can handle the spoon on his own. He mostly just gets a little of whatever veggie I'm cutting up for dinner along with a wedge of avocado.

We did cereal and a mix of BLW and purees. Like, avocado for lunch and dinner and cereal for breakfast. I understand from reading HB that it's unusual to start with three meals a day but that was what our pedi told us....

Interesting so many skipped cereal. I don't really see value in it and likely will go straight to purees since she's already six months. Maybe this weekend! Her 6 month well check isn't until beginning of September and she is reaching for food non-stop.

Skipped cereals and purees! Went straight to banana, avocado, and sweet potato!

@cmomma17: ditto this!
although i didn't get the hang of what i should do if i skipped purees and and cereals right away, so it was probably closer to 7 months before we got the hang of solids.
One of LO's favorite foods for the longest time was mashed banana and avocado. He would never eat avocado plain. You should totally try it! He is almost 21 months and still eats it actually!

We went straight to purées, starting a few days after she turned 6 months. I think the first was sweet potato. She liked homemade and Earths Best, but hated another brand I tried.

We started with squash, avocado, etc. blw style. After a few weeks, I did introduce fortified cereal (oatmeal) because I wanted to be sure about iron. To this day, breakfast is often iron-fortified cereal and fruit-that's his only ”baby” food at 14 mos.

Skipped cereal and started with fruit and veggie purées at 6 months

We did BLW, so at 6 months, we gave him some banana to play with. We did lots of soft fruits and vegetables first, then just gave him whatever we were eating (cooked with minimal salt) after a few months.

We mainly use cereal (oatmeal) to thicken up runny purees. We make most of her food ourselves and find that some foods, like peaches, are pretty soupy and DD likes her food on the thicker side. I do like that it gets a bit of iron into her, too. But the only time she gets plain cereal is if she eats up all her fruit/veg and still seems hungry, then I'll make a bit of cereal to top her off.

Skipped cereal and went straight to purees at 6 mos with some BLW mixed in.

We just did solids (no cereals, no purees) and started on real food-avocados, banana, etc. She didn't take to BLW well.. Then we did purees.....then we did whole foods followed up with purees. Then whole foods. Ugh, what a mess, LOL

we mixed oatmeal cereal and purees for a while--i felt like the oatmeal gave it a little more bulk because some purees are pretty runny.

We tried to skip cereal and do purees at 6 months, but Xander HATED it, so after a week or two of trying, I went and tried cereal and he liked that a LOT better!

Straight to purees. Her Ped didn't see any value in rice and cereals, and I wasn't too keen on them either.

There is a lot of value in cereals, especially something like oatmeal or a multigrain cereal - carbs are important for energy and brain development, iron is important for BF babies...
We started solids at 6 months with fruits and vegetables, but eventually added in oatmeal (usually mixed with fruit) and protein (mostly eggs, some beans, meat, and yogurt). It's okay to be adventurous, especially with different types of food, spices, textures, etc. Just watch your baby for signs that s/he is liking or not liking a specific food. For example, many parents start their babies with avocado and that can be great for a lot of babies, but the high fat content can also be hard on tiny stomachs - DD threw up every time we tried avocado before about 14 months. But other foods that people avoid, like eggs, she *loved.* Know your baby, know yourself, and trust your gut.

@septca: los favorite foods from probably 7 months on are spicy! The more flavor the better!

@Mrs. Lion: Yep. My DD only eats beans if they are loaded with cumin, curry, or 5-spice powder.

Did cereal, but LO was allergic. Then went to purées and LO didn't love them or eat much. Ended up having the most luck with baby led weaning.
