I'm no help, I want answers too. She's almost 8 months and I would love to put her down at night and not have to worry about her waking up every 4 hours to nurse. My pediatrician recommended to stop co-sleeping as an answer but if someone has a different approach, that would be awesome. (:

She did stop at one point, but picked it up shortly thereafter. We decided not to intervene until it stopped putting her back to sleep and it was clear that she was doing it out of habit. She wouldn't really nurse but would freak out if I tried to unlatch her. We went from a quick 10ish minutes to an hour+. Our intervention was for DH to go in for wake-ups. He would soothe her back to sleep. For a while she waffled between STTN and him having to go in. When that stopped working, we "sleep trained." She cried for less than 5 minutes before putting herself back to sleep. Night time sleep has been a dream since.

@scg00387: Around 10 months. It was after a particularly horrible weeklong regression when LO and I were traveling alone. It was like she was a newborn again. Looking back, I think her multiple wake ups were a result of the nursing to sleep habit during the night.

@scg00387: It's a good way to go if you're OK with the remaining wake-up for a bit longer ... it was always quick and quiet and I was used to it. My half-hearted attempts at CIO just weren't worth it -- he got so angry and the alternative was much easier!

I refuse to CIO. My 14 month old still wakes up once per night. He just recently within the last month has gone more than a 4 hour stretch during the day as well. However, I never say no.

@hellocupcake: I'm in the same boat...was wondering if the nighttime nursing would be cut back considerably if we didn't cobed. That said, at this point it's not bothering me. What did your ped have to say about co sleeping?

I thought the same thing about the self soothing. My son is 14 months old and based on some of his habits and social anxiety I figured he could never soothe himself. I recently started a part time job 2 days per week that would take place during times he usually would nap (honestly still did most of them in my arms) However, DH said he goes down with no crying. Then I realized, that when he gets hurt he can cry and manage through it now, without me or a breast. He's actually more capable of self-soothing himself, than our 5 year old is (co-sleep not bed and formula fed) It just took a lot longer to surface.

I think he stopped around 14 months, lots of good and not so good nights to get there. Between 10-11 months he wanted it a lot more, which was rough, but I just didn't offer it first thing and tried snuggling instead. After a few weeks he just stopped waking up since I wasn't offering the good stuff. We hit speed bumps here and there because he always seemed to get sick and that always brought night nursing back. My biggest challenge was not just crashing on our guest bed with him for the rest of the night. I had to remember to put him back in his own bed and try to avoid nursing the rest of the night since it was just so easy. It has been a very gradual process for us since I'm not into CIO, but by 16-18 months he sleep got awesome!!!

@lolabee: same here! He knows I've got the milk and that if he cries I will plug him up lol.

@lolabee: she just said that being so close at night makes it easier for her to want it more often she suggested we stop cosleeping and notice that if it's out of sight out of mind kind of deal. I just hope she weans on her own because I don't think I can be the one to cut her off

i had to sleep train to night wean at 16 months!

Lo is 9.5 months now and goes through spurts where he'll STTN, the rest of the time he's up 1x per night...I keep saying when he hits 10 months, I'll focus on night weaning, but I am really hoping he just drops it on his own. I feel like if he is STTN some times, he doesn't really need it...but at the same time, I know that in the MOTN, it's easier to nurse 1x than listen to crying! I'd like to partially wean around 1 year, so I don't know if it's better to put off night weaning til then and do most sessions together, or work on it earlier.

At 21 months DS was still nursing 2+ times (up to 5 or more!) overnight. He self weaned on his own at 21 months and did everything all at once, cold turkey.

@scg00387: At 8/9 months we had a bout of reverse cycling. He would refuse bottles of BM all day (I WOH 7:30am to 5:30pm) and then wanted to nurse throughout the night. I was a zombie. I thought I'd never sleep again. Then just before 10 months, he slept completely through the night and started refusing to nurse. By 11 months, I would have had to hold him down and force him to continue breastfeeding, so that's when it ended for us.

E pretty much night weened himself right before he turned one. I started to let him fuss for 5-10 minutes before I would go in, but if he really started to cry, or was still fussing after 10 min I would go in and nurse. He was only waking up once a night, so i wasn't really bothered by it and I don't get to see him much during the week so I enjoyed our quiet snuggle time. He started sleeping through the night about a week before his birthday and has been doing it pretty consistently since. I nursed him at night a handful of times in the next few months when he was having rough teething nights. But we completely weened at 14 months.

LO was a pretty consistent once-a-night nurser from 6 months to 9 months. She dropped it on her own then, but it wasn't like an all-or-none thing. She would STTN for a couple nights or a week, then want to eat once again for a couple days, then STTN, then maybe a night where she ate briefly, then back to STTN. She also would want to nurse at night again when her canines and molars came in right before a year. But has been fully night weaned since then.
