For those that are already parents..
How would describe contractions? I know that when they come I will just know - it will hurt THAT much? but until then every little pain I feel I wonder if it is a contraction!

Mine felt like cramps that just got longer and more painful as time went on. I also had back labor and that felt like the cramos I get in my back right before my period but way worse.

I compare them to really really bad menstrual cramps. I didn't have back labor. Around 8cm dilated, I described them later to my husband as this: Imagine the uterus is a paper bag blown up like a balloon and tied at the end. It's perfect and smooth and round, and then a giant comes and crushes it in his huge hand, making it a tiny crumpled up ball, crushing steadily for a few minutes. Finally he releases it, and the paper bag slowly inflates again to its original state... .then two minutes later, the giant comes by again.

Like cramps! Just extremely bad cramps!!! I got them really bad in my lower back too. My water broke and then my contractions started, but I STILL wasn't sure that I was in labor and I called my mom and told her everything going on!

The worst pain I've ever had. I had back labor and I was just writhing in the bed each time they came. Just like someone was squeezing my back with hands and twisting it horribly as hard as humanly possible.

My period cramps were more like constant aches- for me, contractions were more like when you have one of those gut-wrenching stomach bugs where your whole abdomen clenches up and it's awful for a while and then everything relaxes.

For me contractions were like really, really bad indigestion cramps. Menstrual cramps were never like that for me.

I agree. Like really really really (REALLY) bad cramps. When my friend first told me they feel like bad cramps, I was thinking "Oh, I know what bad cramps feels like. That's not too bad.".
Ohhhhh no. It's like the worst cramps you've ever gotten x 1,000,000.

Every labor is different, my first one it was like having the worst menstraul cramps EVER combined with a sledge hammer to my tailbone (gotta love back labor) and my second was easy, I thought I had gas and active labor was maybe 10-15 minutes and not painful, just more pressure.
A dear friend just had her first baby, without epideral, and she was laughing and joking the whole time. She said hers was more pressure than pain also.

At first it was not so bad cramps. But they were often so I went to the hospital. But apparently they weren't bad enough to make me dilate even though they were 3-5 minutes apart. So I was sent home, where they got a million times worse and I was back within an hour.

I was induced my "everyday" contractions felt like bad cramps down low that would move up while tightening. After my water broke it felt like everything was grinding together with no cushioning, worst cramping/pressure/pain ever.
