My son is 5 weeks old and just in the last 48 hours decreased his 3-4 hour sleep stretches to 1-2 hours, max. I know the most likely reason is that he isn't eating enough, but trust me - we do everything possible to get him to finish his bottle or even eat more before letting him to down. Ultimately it doesn't matter how much he eats though, if he eats 2 ounces or 6 he will still wake up an hour or two after eating - SCREAMING until we feed him again.
He has always screamed upon waking until we give him food, so nothing new there, but does anyone know why his sleep stretches might have decreased so much? I thought they were supposed to increase! We haven't done anything differently, he sleeps in his crib in his room just like he did from the beginning and we have a bedtime routine at the same time every night. We have always been good about waking him during the day so he'll sleep better at night, but now he doesn't even want to sleep during the day anymore either.
I guess I'm wondering - what is normal at this age? I've read a couple of baby books, but none of them say what to expect daytime or nighttime as far as infant sleep, they only talk about 6 month + sleep habits.
