My 19 month old spits out his water or milk every single $^^#!$^^ time he has it. He'll drink some and then he'll start spitting it out. When he does that, we take the drink, tell him that we don't spit out whatever it is and that he's all done. He still does it. Every time. Every day. For the past 7 months ever since he's started using a cup. Im so sick of this behavior. Can I slap it out of him yet? Help!!!!!!!!!

My daughter went through a spitting stage when she was a little older - it wasn’t tied to drinking anything...more like she just discovered she could do it and thought it was just amazing to do all. the. time. We ended up telling her the only place she’s allowed to spit is in the bathtub. Giving her an okay outlet to “practice” her newfound talent seemed to help - she still felt like she won a little bit, but we didn’t have to deal with it otherwise.
At the time, we had a time-out/behavior system going on for a couple other target behaviors, so we temporarily added spitting (anywhere other than in the tub) to that list until it’s novelty wore off.
She was a little older though, so I’m not sure if any of that’s helpful for littler ones. But gosh I feel for you! That kind of stuff is so grating!

I've heard that they're doing it partly for attention, so I've tried to not react. Just take the drink away, say "we don't spit food" and not talk to DD until I'm done cleaning up. Doesn't work, especially since there are two more kids at the table laughing their heads off, and DD feels like a star.
I've also tried encouraging her to do something more constructive, like putting the bottle down, or giving it to me, and then making a big deal about it. The positive reinforcement seems to work better. It works even better when her big sibs pitch in and start clapping for her if she behaves.
I guess it's all about peer pressure in this house
