My pediatrician offered us formula samples at one of our early visits since we had to supplement. Turns out LO prefers the ready to feed formula which is expensive! Last time we were there, I asked for more and he gave us three full sized bottles. We are going back today - is it really tacky to ask again?

I'm pretty sure they get it free from the manufacturer, so I wouldn't worry about it

Go for it - they absolutely get them for free and are usually happy to hand them out!

When we were on specialty toddler milk (for MSPI) I got all sorts of free samples and coupons. It isn't like you aren't paying for any of it. AND they have to get rid of it before it expires or they end up throwing a lot away.

Well, it isn't tacky and I would certainly do it myself, but this is partly why the price is so high. Someone is paying for those samples!

I would try to get LO to take the powdered kind. the ready to eat kind is SUPER EXPENSIVE and once they're onto more than 2 oz, kind of moot anyways

I probably wouldn't, but that's because I'm really shy and awkward, haha. We started supplementing at 4 weeks, and I didn't have to buy formula until DD was almost 3 months though, because our nurses were REALLY good about shoving samples down our throats, thank goodness!!

I agree with @blackbird. A year of the ready to feed formula is going to be ridiculously expensive. I probably wouldn't ask for more and would try my best to get my LO to just take powdered.

I wouldn't ask unless they offer it. But that's just me. I know we can afford it so I would feel too embarrassed to ask. But I would find a way to wean him off RTF b/c it would be quite costly in the long run and less convenient to bring when you go out. Try mixing in formula really slowly and hopefully he'll forget all about the RTF. Both of my boys like warm milk versus room temp so that helped.

You can always ask (and I'd ask the nurse) and if you feel more comfortable, you can say "Did you have any more samples of the ready-to-eat XXX kind of formula? I haven't been able to find that kind in our grocery store and that's what LO prefers." Then at least you have a (little white lie) reason to ask for it! I plan to ask for more formula samples at our appt Thurs- I have no shame!!!

Thanks everyone! I asked at the front desk & got two bottles! I might try to transition her to the powder after this. I thought the powder gave her gas but I think it's my breastmilk, actually (we combo feed).

@daniellemybelle: I've heard the powder can make them gassy if you shake it too much because of the additional air? but, I could be TOTALLY wrong! so maybe try swirling or mixing with a ...idk. a stirrer? lol. just trying to help but looking like an idiot

@daniellemybelle: That's great that you asked! They get it for free so it can't hurt to ask. What brand is it? We buy the ready feed Similac Advanced from Sam's Club and they take manufacturer's coupon too.

@daniellemybelle: The powder gave my LO gas when I shook it too hard like @sorrycharlie suggested. I bought the Dr. Brown's Formula Pitcher and it prevents any bubbles in the bottle. It made a huge difference!

@daniellemybelle: I LOL'd at our appt yest- the nurse asked what formula we used and what LO liked then asked if we wanted samples. Gave us ALL THIS! Two powder, two jugs liquid, and a ton of the individual 2 ounce tubes. I didn't even have to ask. It was so heavy the bag broke in our driveway! Wish you were here I would share!
