My LO is definitely a memorizer. She'll sit there and "read" aloud because she has memorized all the words on each page of her books. My SIL tells me that my niece is the same way but that my nephew never did that -- so I guess it is a learning style?

Not sure if my Lo is a memorizer, but I'm sure she will be. Met many a memorizing child in my lifetime!

That's normal, according to the reading I've done on teaching kids to read. First they usually learn the word, then they associate the picture, then they string the words together to understand the context.
I've found it interesting that in the Montessori method, they teach the kids to write before reading.
