@agold: Thanks. I disagree mostly about the help this thread has been to me- some of my fear has been the unknown, and 6 months ago, I was in the "never going to do IVF camp," so I thank you ladies for helping me understand the process and see that people survive it.
I found a great deal on flights, so we booked the tickets. We haven't officially heard back from the RE, but it seems like it should be ok. Our credit card includes trip insurance, so if the RE objects, he'll have some paperwork to do. Our seats aren't great, but it's a direct flight, and hopefully, a week on Paris will get me in the right frame of mind. I'm also looking at European meds. At IVFmeds.com, the prices are about half what they are in the US, and I am confident in their quality. The main issue is getting them through customs. I am considering having them shipped to our friend there, and then bringing them home with me. It might save me the cost of my flight.

@AmeliaBedilia: oh shoot. I was saying that mostly tongue in check! I'm so glad this IVF thread has helped you through your iuis and upcoming IVF! Fortunately, I think IVF has a 100% survival rate.
As for European meds, I agree that the quality would be fine. But why don't you just have them shipped to you? When I was looking into purchasing them over US meds, there was zero issue with me having them shipped.

@Aqualov: wow! Your BFF is one interesting girl with all the pregnancy talk! I'm so glad you've been able to get the message through to her.

I'm on day 3 of bed rest! I'm just doing three days and going to work as normal tomorrow.
Tips for girls taking medrol: it's just a nasty pill, but eating a clementine right away takes away the nasty lingering taste off your and is sufficient to fill your stomach so you don't get sick.
ETA: one clementine ONLY works to line the stomach for later day pills - NOT your first pill of the day. Lesson learned - I threw up for an hour and my husband is oh so disappointed in me.
Downside of bed rest - blood from the shots on my white sheets! Even though I'm certain the needle points aren't bleeding anymore, I have little blood points (and one big blood circle ) on my sheets. Ummmm.. Three days in and these are getting washed and bleached ASAP today. Such a bummer.
nectarine / 2192 posts
@agold: I've heard of the meds getting tied up in customs, so I figured me bringing them would expedite things. Hope you can. Do some laundry magic on the sheets- I dampen with water then use salt for blood stains.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: thanks. They are in the wash now and I was basically carried downstairs to the couch. After I spent time hunched over the toilet puking my brains out, husband thought I might as well move to the couch for a bit today because what more stress can be done to the stomach than throwing up? As for European meds, Do you know how much money you would save by using them over US meds?
nectarine / 2192 posts
@agold: The cost of meds is about half. I haven't gotten the list yet. I'm going to call winfertility again (I keep getting on hold, then VM) to get an idea of their prices- ovidrel is cheapest there and hopefully others are too.

I finally got a helpful email with more details! He wants me on estrace for 6 days- ugh but tolerable. He wants me on the pill prior, but he had said I could do the progesterone only
One prior, so hopefully we can still do that. I need to get a sonohysterogram. I also found out we both need std testing- annoying. I asked about the intralipid infusions for NK cells, and he said mine only went down by 2.3%, so he would leave it up to me.
My meds list:
Follistim or Gonal-F- (the amount of this varies greatly, could be as low as 1500iu total or as high as 3750iu)
Menopur x10
Z-pac x2
Prednisone
Crinone-Progesterone (approx 30 applicators)
Ovidrel x2
Cetrotide x6
I asked if crinone can be substituted since I'm finding it to be very expensive. Any suggestions on ways to save on any of these meds?

@AmeliaBedilia: @Amorini: @agold: @Aqualov: Thank you ladies so much for your responses! It was so thoughtful of you to carefully consider my situation and empathize/offer some advice! I've cooled down a bit and think my best bet is to just to leave things alone for now. I know with the holidays coming up so everyone is busy - it won't be too hard to avoid a lot of time together. I think I will be able to deal with it a lot better once the IVF is over, whatever the outcome is. I definitely don't want to hurt her feelings since I'm sure she is going through a difficult time of her own. It is true we want/expect our friends to be superheroes, but sometime they just can't be and that's ok.
@AmeliaBedilia: Yay for Paris! It is really nice to have that trip to look forward to and to keep your mind off the IVF a little bit. So glad you got your meds list now. Really similar to mine. One suggestion I have in terms of savings is for the Centrotide and Gonal-F. If you are totally self-pay, you can apply to the manufacturer for a coupon that is income-based. I just did this and saved 25%! Totally easy and worth it! https://fertilitylifelines.com/?q=save-fertility-treatments/savings-self-pay-patients
Also, while Progesterone in Oil is a pain in the a** (literally), I know it is pretty inexpensive, so maybe that will be a substitute for the crinone.
@agold: OMG, I hope that you are feeling better! So sorry that you had a bad reaction to the medrol. And thank you for the tips about taking it… I'll be there soon. Hope the rest of your bed rest is uneventful !! Other than that incident, how are you doing? Getting excited?! I also have sheets that were scarred by IVF - although it is from the adhesive on the estrogen patches. That stuff really sticks. I've scrubbed them so many times and I can't get it all off.
@Amorini: Wishing you all the best with your work situation. So exciting - so much potential! And also, what an amazing realization you had about the role of IF in your current situation. It really does put things so much into perspective and make you aware of what is really important in life.
@Aqualov: The BFF relationship can be so complicated, can't it? I'm really glad that yours understands where you are coming from now and is more understanding of your situation now. I have already told mine that she needed to stop telling me how fun and exciting it was that I was definitely going to have twins every time I had a transfer (I've had 5 transfers totaling 10 embryos and I only have one little girl) because clearly success is not guaranteed and I wasn't in the early phases of IVF anymore where I always thought it was going to work. Not that I was trying to be pessimistic, mind you, just realistic. So she did back off on that topic thank goodness.

@AmeliaBedilia: I had some of the same meds and ended up using Winfertility. You can have your doctor send the prescription to a few places, such as Winfertility or Freedom Fertility, and they can price it out for you. The range of the follistim/gonal F is huge! How much per day are they having you take? I would probably recommend assuming that you would stim for 10 days and buy enough meds (follistim/gonal F) to cover that.
Freedom Fertility can take your health insurance, so some might be cheaper that way. Plus, if there are coupons/discounts out there, they can take those. I don't remember what discounts are out there, though.
Is your doctor wiling to send a prescription overseas? If you do that, I would probably just have them shipped home instead of you dealing with getting it through the airport. Just be careful as the Gonal F/Follistim is supposed to be refrigerated. Keep that in mind if you decide to bring it home yourself..
Good luck in figuring this out! It took me a long time to decide where to buy from.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: When I was talking with WinFertility, I spoke with a lady named Angel. She was amazing. Maybe you can ask for her. Also, ask your RE nurse or financial lady if there is a coupon for follistim that they could sign you up for. My RE nurse signed me up for a 50% off coupon. I don't know how I would have gotten it otherwise. She told me something like she only had one left, which made me think they are in limited supply. Menopur is what I found to be the most expensive. I don't know anything about crinone, sorry. I agree with @GreenThumb: that the progesterone in oil is not too expensive compared to the others. Also, I'll second what @NorthStar: said about pharmacies other than WinFertility taking insurance. I used MDR Pharmacy and they applied my insurance to all oral tablets and even estradioal. And I have pretty crappy insurance as far as IVF is concerned. Lastly, I would also suggest having your european meds shipped. And they won't be the same meds as the US meds. I don't think you would have follistim or whatever. It would be something totally different.
@GreenThumb: I'm so glad you've cooled down about your friend. Its true that she's having her own struggle, its just that our IF struggle trumps all, at least in our own minds. You sound like you are a good friend and are doing the best that you can. That's all you can do. As for my bed rest, I just took three days of fairly strict bed rest. I'm back at work today trying to do as minimal of walking as possible. I'm trying to keep excited! I like to look up pictures of embryos of girls who have gotten pregnant and see if I find any successful embryos that look worse than mine. This is a mostly counterproductive activity that I do not suggest to anyone. And I"m so sorry about your sheets! I can't even imagine the adhesion getting stuck. Have you tried bleaching them? Or soaking them in hot soapy water?
How is everyone else doing????
nectarine / 2192 posts
You ladies are awesome! I talked to IVF meds and they recommended shipping straight to the U.S., and takes two weeks. Im going to check with winfertility and see what they can do. I talked to a pharmacist who said the gonal f overflow is much easier to get out of the multi dose vial than then pen. Am I better off using the multi dose vial or the pen? He also said the amount of overfill is proportional so it doesn't matter which size I get. What do you ladies recommend?
pear / 1881 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: I did Follistim for IVF and Gonal F for an IUI and found both to be fine regarding getting the overfill. For follistim, I thought the pen was super easy. I did as much as I could from one vial, took out the vial, added a new one and finished the dose by continuing to push on the pen. easy peasy.
As far as Follistim, the overfill is quite a bit, so if you go that route, I would recommend ordering in 300IU vials (instead of one big one at 900iu). Each 300IU pen actually has 420IU, so you get 120IU extra! That is 360IU extra for every 900IU's, which you wouldn't get that much extra if you ordered the larger filled pen. As long as you can handle doing several shots, it's totally worth it.
I have no idea how the overseas stuff is and if they have any overfill.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: Ditto on what @NorthStar: said about follistim overfill. But i would think that your RE nurse would incorporate the overfill into the prescription she fills out for you. The overfill is easy to use. Its just fluid in the vial like regular non-overfill. I've only ever found that there is just a tiny bit - a few drops - left in every vial of everything that I use. Not enough to ever worry about considering the amounts that I need.
nectarine / 2192 posts
@NorthStar: @agold: Thanks!
I just heard back from my doc, and they'll let me substitute PIO once daily AND prometrium BID for crinone. I have a bottle of the prometrium 200mg (30). Crinone would cost about $450, and it looks like progesterone in oil is $58 through my insurance - (not sure if 1 or 2 vials, goes to my deductible if I get it in January, which is fine), or WinFertility said that it's $15 for 2 vials plus estrace through them. If I get pregnant and deliver, I will meet my deductible, so then it would be cheapest to go through insurance. I just need to figure out whether to do it through Win or my insurance, and deal with the shots.
My doc does want the sonohysterogram- does anyone remember what it cost them?
Winfertility recommended I see if my doc will let me substitute Ganirelix for cetotide (saves $20/dose). If so, 5 pens of Follistim 300 plus 6 ganirelix will cost $1156- much cheaper than other places! She told me that the menopur is more expensive with them. Anyone know the cheapest place to get menopur?
Sorry to be a little crazy- this is all so expensive and overwhelming!
pear / 1881 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: Check MDR Pharmacy or Freedom Pharmacy for Menopur. It's about $65/vial, which is pretty standard everywhere I've looked.
How much follistim are you doing each day? 5 pens seems kind of low, so I want to be sure that you are getting enough. If it's easy to get some the day of if your dosage changes or you stim longer than expected, then it might not be a big deal. I have no where in my city to buy it outright..
pear / 1986 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: I would definitely check Freedom - with the Compassionate Care discount I mentioned above - my total was less than WinFertility's cash discount. Freedom mentioned checking around for a Menopur coupon, too, but I couldn't find one to use so far. Let me know if you find a really good price on that one .
nectarine / 2192 posts
@GreenThumb: Will do. I'm contemplating international menopur - $350 plus $25-50 shipping for 10 vials. I did find some coupons on follistim and ganirelix. https://www.shadygrovefertility.com/affording-care/medications
I don't think WinFertility will let you combine them, but their prices are so awesome that I'll probably still get it from them.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: Don't worry about goind crazy. I had a near meltdown for two days because my original meds quote was over $5,000. I'm so glad you liked Angel at WinFertility. Even though I didn't end up going with WinFertility, she truly was an angel.
I went through MDR Pharmacy (which bills itself as Encino Pharmacy, I don't know why), but basically because I had a 50% coupon for follistim. If I didn't have that, then WinFeritlity would have been cheaper. There are threads around HelloBee where all of this is discussed in detail because there were a few of us girls buying meds around the same time.
I got 4 follistim vials (300iu) for $1,118.40 (before the discount). I ended up needing an addiitonal vial, but I had some left over from a previous IUI. So I think 5 vials is normal, but that's just me. Ganirelix came in their own pre-filled pens which was nice (but deciving because that shot was a bitch). I got 4 for $519.00. So Winfertility is definitely cheaper there.
I got 30 vials(?) of menupur (75iu each) for $2,396.68, so $79.89 each. @NorthStar: got a better deal than me!!! I think I needed an extra day of this but my RE's office had some on hand and gave it to me and hasn't charged me for it.
I've gotten my progesterone for $44.95 each little vial of 50mg.
Winfertility will not let you use coupons because they say they do group pricing, not individual pricing. So a coupon on one individual drug wouldn't work.
You are moving so quick with all of this!! How exciting!

hey guys, I'm so sorry I've been off the grid a bit. It's really hard being stuck here, because I can't even cycle at the moment - so I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself, and especially more sensitive than normal, since I "should" be gearing up for a Christmas announcement, and instead, I am stuck here, with dud hcg levels. I am following along though, but struggling. x
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@jaguar: Hi there. I'm glad you popped in. I know this can be a hard thread to join in on if you are in limbo between cycles. Its perfectly understandable to be feeling so sorry for yourself. I'm feeling so sorry for you, too, for all you are going through. Do you have any update on your hcg levels? Have they gotten to zero yet?
grapefruit / 4045 posts
Hi girls! Where are you all at? I'm bored at work. I almost bought a baby onsie on etsy just now but stopped myself from such madness.
nectarine / 2192 posts
@jaguar: Hugs!
@agold: I hear ya. Back when I thought having sex made you pregnant, on the first cycle trying when my period was a few days late (never happens), I found a stroller and car seat on a ridiculous deal and bought them. So stupid! Though I haven't seen a better deal on them since.
I called a few overseas pharmacies. I'm thinking of going with IVF pharmacy for menopur and possibly FSH. They guarantee delivery in two weeks. Ten vials of menopur is only $375 shipped. I'm trying to decide about follistim/gonal f. RE says I can use either, 1500-3750 units. ( AMH 0.27 but FSH 6 and AFC 15-20 so who knows?) winfertility has follistim 300 for about $205 based on my calculations. I was going to buy the follistim 300 at IVF pharmacy for $160 each, plus a pen $15. Of course, they're sold out of the 300. I could get gonal f for $175 for 300 units. I've heard follistim overfill is 125 units, and gonal f is less? My questions:
1. What is the overfill for gonal f and follistim 300? Does the overflow increase proportionally?
2. How much would you order? I have a gonal f 300 pen that I've used 200 units. In a pinch, I could order from winfertility.
3. How bad are PIO shots? I can get crinone from Europe $95/15 applicators and use BID or do prometrium Vaginally BID and PIO shots daily for Much less.
pear / 1881 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: did your doctor tell you how much gonal or follistim you are starting per day? They must have an idea???
1. The follistim overfill is 120 units for a 300 vial (so total of 420). I don't remember for gonal
2. How old is the gonal f? I've heard that once you start a vial, you need to finish within 30 days. I also wouldn't mix using gonal and follistim in same cycle.
3. Haven't had to do pio shots
Does that help any??
pear / 1881 posts
@agold: I've been so busy at work that I've only been able to see what you guys post, but barely any time to actually respond. I suppose it is nice being busy so that the time goes fast until I can start again. I have another amh and a dhea blood test Thursday.
@jaguar: glad to see you pop in and I completely get how you feel. Are your numbers finally down to zero? Sometimes, I wonder if we will ever be able to give our daughter a sibling.
Oh, when I had my transfer, the printer was down, so I didn't get a pic. Well, it's now fixed and I got the pic in the mail yesterday . Not sure if I should be thankful or cry..
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@NorthStar: Being busy at work is great for distractions. As for pictures of embryos... so far the pictures have both times only given me anxiety. Its great you have good blood tests coming up soon! I'd like to get all my blood work done again sometime in the near future if this FET doesn't work out.
@AmeliaBedilia: Its great you have to much time to make decisions about which pharmacy to use. When do you need to have these medicines delivered to you to start your cycle? As for your question about the amount you should order - just trust your RE nurse. She will tell you how much you need to order and absolutely should be totally aware of how much overfill is in each follistim vial and incorporate that into your prescription. She will be writing the prescription so just order what is on the prescription. Like @NorthStar: said, I would not mix follistim and gonal F. As for your left over gonal F, I wouldn't even incorporate that amount into consideration for reducing your doctor's prescription since its not enough to let you skip an entire vial. Just leave it in your fridge as a "just in case you need extra" even in the event that the medicine is still good.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: Also... about the PIO. I don't know what crinone, BID or prometrium are, but if they are all vaginal things that are anything like monestate yeast infection medicine, I think I would rather do the PIO shots even though they are, quite literally, a pain in the ass. The actual shots themselves aren't near as bad as I was anticipating. I actually did two tonight without icing and fully survived. Even if its painful, its just so quick. The problem is the giant brick sized lump/hump/swelling that I've developed on each sides of my upper butt/lower back. Its basically just enhancing my lovehandles which is anything but lovely. It hurts and I hate it, but I still don't think I'd prefer gooey anything dripping out of me all day.
ETA: I'm so amazed you have all of these options! Your RE must be really flexible which is amazing.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@Amorini: Did you have the HSS test yesterday? How did it go? I'm hoping that all is good on that front!
nectarine / 2192 posts
@agold: He's flexible on some things, some things not. He doesn't know I'm planning on getting the menopur from Europe. His nurse hasn't responded to my email from Monday night which is annoying. If I can substitute the ganirelix in place of cetrotide, and get the menopur from UK, my initial order for everything including 5 follistim 300 pens will be about $1700. If I need four more pens (the high amount), I can get them from winfertility for another $850. While this has been a huge headache, it's way cheaper than my initial estimate from freedom fertility( $5000). I'm hoping to order the menopur tomorrow- they guarantee delivery in two weeks.
I had a Christmas party last night and it seemed like everyone was pregnant. This includes my friend who is pregnant with #3. We had been trying for over a year when she told Me she was pregnant with #2. (We've been trying 2.5 years.) and she's 38- how?????
I have my saline uterine ultrasound next week at my first monitoring appointment. Are they likely to do a mock transfer? How much is this likely to cost?
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@AmeliaBedilia: You are doing some amazing wheeling and dealing with your meds. Be sure to tell your doctor you are going to use european meds though. They are different than the US meds so you just want to make sure that whatever cocktail you are ordering up will all workout in the end. But if you can get such an amazing savings then you are really getting rewarded for such great effort!
Good luck with your ultrasound. Is that an HSS? As for a mock cycle, my doctor only did one with my FET, he did not do it before the egg retrieval/fresh transfer. Mine ended up costing $1,241.00. I'm pretty sure that does not include any meds because I was able to use what was left over from my IVF cycle. All of this was quoted out to me when I first met with the financial person months before.

Oh, I"m just 5dp6dt and going out of my mind. Don't mind me....
Following FET, did anyone notice any CM? (I feel so silly even paying attention to any CM since I've stopped doing that long before I even started IVF.)
Also tip for anyone who will be doing PIO shots - don't think you can wear high waisted pants to work and try to twist around and pull them down a bit in the empty work bathroom in order to catch a good glimpse of your PIO shot speckled, lumpy bruising butt in the mirror behind the door and not get embarrassingly caught.

Started spotting yesterday after finishing Provera a few days ago... and bloods this morning <5 - FINALLY NOT PREGNANT.
persimmon / 1132 posts
@jaguar: Hooray! (It feels strange to say that when what you want is to be very pregnant!) , But I'm glad you can start to move on now!
@agold: I hope your CM is a good sign. I asked my RE about the minimal lining number and they said 9 mm. Every RE seems different! Sounds like you got totally busted looking at your lumpy lumps! Haha!
@AmeliaBedilia: Wow, you sound super psyched to be getting prepped for your fresh cycle! I'm glad you got your Paris tix and everything seems to lining up! Hey, those 38 year-olds are super fertile...it's just total bs that we're told they're not. However, sorry to hear you felt outnumbered by preggos! I think I wrote on HB how I was completely surrounded at the grocery store. There were bellies in every aisle!
So yesterday I had a saline sono ($600 with my discount) and all was well. I still have a 2 cm cyst on my healing ovary but it shouldn't effect the transfer. I learned that all the estrogen patches (Vivelle) and progesterone (Prometrium) I got for my fresh cycle won't work for my FET. Instead I'll need Estrace (patches?) and Crinone (chunky mess). I had the option of PIO but I'd actually prefer to avoid injecting myself and lumpy bumps. To each their own! I need more Lupron, too. So with Win, I was quoted $485. I'll get pricing from a few others but I bet Win's the best I'll do.
My work situation (boss/branch director quitting with drama!) is definitely working me now. I don't feel worked up, just exhausted by it. By all means, quit if that's going to make you happier, but why like this?! Anyway I'll learn on Friday exactly where this leaves me. The owner has already said he wants to keep me and not close our branch office (which will now be just me!), but it remains to be seen how those details will work out.

@jaguar: Need to catch up on what everyone else posted, but saw this first, and YAY, YAY, YAY!! I've never been so happy to find out someone was officially told they are not pregnant I hope this can be the end of this long wait for you and you can move on to whatever comes next.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@jaguar: Okay...I'm not sure what emotions are appropriate in response to your post... but this is a moving on point for you. So that's a nice silver lining in an otherwise totally crappy situation. Do you have any idea what you plan to do next? Maybe just enjoy the holidays as best you can!
@Amorini: Yep, I was fully busted. Red faced and all. Claimed to have been bit by a spider. I'm so glad your saline sono-whatever was all clear and that you even got a discounted price! Gung ho, FET! The price of your meds seems right since you are buying all new meds. That's what I was quoted until I realized I had left overs from my fresh cycle that I could use. As for PIO vs inserts... I would have totally chosen inserts over PIO at any point prior to doing the actual shots themselves. I even asked my doctor about vag inserts as an alternative!
So best of luck to you.
Me and my lumpy, bruising, and now apparently at times profusely bleeding, butt will just be over here cheering you on!
(But even still..the shots aren't THAT bad.. I'm just being a little dramatic although totally honest.) And now holy crap! What's going on with your work situation!?!? Did someone tell you to quit, or are you just saying that in jest to yourself? Do you have the option of not working. (Ha, if you do, quit asap you lucky girl!) I hope everything is okay!
persimmon / 1132 posts
@agold: Ha! Sorry, I see now that what I wrote was confusing. I meant (as if speaking to my outgoing boss): "quit if you are going to quit..." I'm just tired of his drama. I have been in some bad work situations but this one is the weirdest. We just started house-hunting and so, at the moment, yes, I do need this job! This whole thing is turning into a hot mess. I'm meeting with the boss's boss (the owner) in an hour....
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@Amorini: Ahh... I see. That's horrible your boss is a dama king - especially at a time when you need stability as you look to buy a new home! As if you don't have enough of your own drama. I hope your meeting with your boss went well! Update, please!

@jaguar: This is the happiest I've been about someone on this board not being pregnant. At least now you can hopefully move forward.
@agold: Thanks for your helpful replies. Fingers crossed for you!
@Amorini: That sounds stressful as if everything you've gone through isn't stressful enough.
I finally heard back from the nurse. RE is fine with ganirelix and also switched to a cheaper trigger shot. I asked if it would be less effective and she assured me that he wouldn't do it if it wouldn't work as well. It's not preferred but ok to switch from follistim to gonal f if needed. I'm still waiting to hear back on the official schedule so I can schedule January monitoring appointments. I need to pick up my micronor to start that. She thought I might start at follistim 300 daily. We will see what he says. I'm going to order my menopur and follistim tomorrow from Europe if they have the follistim in stock, otherwise I will order it from winfertility with the rest of my stuff.

@AmeliaBedilia: This is all really exciting! Scheduling, and ordering, and, on top of it all, France! You've got a lot to look forward to!
