IVF Thread #3

Looks like threads close after a year! That was quite a run... so continuing onto #3....

@AmeliaBedilia: @NorthStar: I read about DHEA in 'It starts with the egg', and there seems to be one clinic that really pushes it, CHR and says there is benefit for AMA, but not much about it for younger people. I would definitely do some blood work first to see if it's necessary before taking it since I think too much is a symptom of PCOS.

@PurplePumps: I was lurking & reading that one yesterday and saw it was closed this morning. Is that why #2 was closed?

Thinking of everyone doing IVF right now. Sending positive thoughts to everyone!!

@bluestriped bee: Not sure why, I was just suspecting it was cause it was 1 yr old. Unless that was just coincidental.

I'd like to join this IVF thread. I'm going to be starting my first IVF cycle in about two or three weeks.

I don't have any experience with DHEA. When I was into tyring anything and everything I could get my hands on, I recall that one being a hormone or something that I wasn't wiling to try without my doctor suggesting or monitoring it. He didn't recommend it so I never tried it. I'm curious to know about other girls who have used it.

Hi! Thanks for restarting the thread, I'm in.

So I had my first bloodwork and ultrasound today after 4 days of stimming. At first I freaked out because I thought the sonographer basically told me I only had one follicle, but she meant only one that was big enough to measure. My right ovary has multiple that are <11 and my left have a few in that category.

So they're upping my dosage for the next two nights before the next u/s. I have a call out to them to learn more about why (450 of Gonal F and 150 of Menopur sounds aggressive?)

Lots of happy thoughts to everyone on this thread

I'm new (and in), I'm waiting for my period to start so I can crack open a pack of birth control pills and get this cycle started. BRING IT ON!

This is my first IVF, I'm 34, and my husband and I are straight to IVF/ICSI/PGS because of severe MFI.

    @bloved: FX!

..damit, i suck a new threads. I didnt mean to put that in the subject!

    @bloved: So exciting, good luck!

@PurplePumps: I started at 375 of Gonal F and 75 of Menopur. I just talked to the nurse and she said everything is coming along and not to worry, the doc just wanted to bump up the dose to get the follicles below 11mm to grow. She thinks I should have some up to 12mm by Thursday and we'll go from there. Didn't realize I'd be stressing already at CD6!

I'm joining. I'm 35, TTC#1. Initially diagnosed unexplained, then MFI, then unexplained, til I saw a new RE last month who found elevated prolactin, borderline thyroid, elevated NK cells, and very low AMH 0.27 but FSH 6 both CD3 and after Femara (AFC 10, but the lower side had a cyst so I wonder if that obscured anything). He started me on Cabergoline, synthroid, and prednisone(after ovulation). We are doing our first IUI this cycle, and then reevaluate IUI vs IVF. The IUI is Friday and I trigger tomorrow night. IVF scares me- I think both the unknown and I'm scared my ovaries won't respond, so I'm joining this thread to help deal with that.

    Hey guys, new thread!

I'm currently on birth control in preparation for a long down-reg cycle. This will be stim #5 in total, but stim #3 since trying for #2. My little girl is nearly 2.5 from an IVF cycle back in 2012.

Hoping for some good luck for everyone with the upcoming cycles. x

    Hi ladies-

I wanted to join the group also- I’ve been lurking on the Infertility board for a while now. A little background- we have a 3 ½ year old little boy & have been TTC #2 since last August. Since then I’ve had 3 MCs- the first one was spontaneous (7 weeks), the other 2 were a blighted ovum. We were referred to our RE after the 2nd MC and went through all of our testing . At this point, the only issue seems to be egg quality due to my age (37, turning 38 in November) so we’ll be doing IVF with PGS. I had a D&C a few weeks ago so we are just waiting for my period to return so we can start BCPs.

Glad to have some other women to share this journey with

As a soon-to-be graduate (due in Nov) of the IVF thread, where I found support and answers to my many questions, I just wanted to wish you all the best of luck and send my love! I'm sure I'll be back in the future when we're ready for #2.

@Carobee: I am also waiting for my period to start at which point I will be put on birth control! I'm currently on cycle day 22. This is my first IVF, but we are just totally unexplained infertility. With PGS, can you do a fresh transfer, or do you have to freeze all the embryos?

  15. agold

@bloved: Good luck today!! How many are you transferring?

@jaguar: Good luck to you. I'm sorry you have had to go through a few IVFs. Its certainly no fun. I hope this one does the trick for you. What exactly is a "long down-reg cycle"?

  17. Carobee

    pea / 11 posts

@agold: I'm CD 23, we are close! I think I'll probably start the birth control really early next week, unless my period decides to be a nutter.

We are going to have to freeze all for PGS. I'm ok with that as my clinic's success rates are fine either way, but I think it's going to be super hard to wait when I get to that point.

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@Carobee: Oh wow, yes we are close! My RE was encouraging skipping the fresh cycle and going straight to a frozen cycle so seems like you have a good course set out. The delay will be tough but you just need to do what you need to do.

@YogiRunner: Sounds like you need a higher dose to start. When I did my gonal/tic cycle, they started me low too and upped my dose to recruit more follicles, then a little more to keep growing them.

  21. YogiRunner

    clementine / 849 posts

@Miss Sarah: Hey there, thank you for the well wishes! I followed your updates in the previous thread to prepare myself for this IVF adventure, and I frequently think of your success story to stay positive and keep a forward momentum. Congratulations on your little one due soon!

@PurplePumps: Last night when I dialed up my gonal-f dose in the pen, I couldn't help but giggle when I realized 450 is the highest it goes! That plus 2 vials of Menopur makes me feel like such a druggie.

Also, have I mentioned how obsessed I am with acupuncture these days? My wonderful acupuncturist fiddled with the needles over my left ovary to kick start it last night... and when she put in the needle near my right (active) ovary, it was this instant really cool energetic feeling. By the time I went to bed both ovaries were on fire. Hoping that's a good thing!

Has anyone changed insurance to get IVF covered? My work is changing things around to have open enrollment in October, and I think that is when the new round of coverage begins. My only other option is to change to an exchange plan, but their enrollment doesn't start until January, and I've been told I don't qualify for special enrollment since I wouldn't be losing my work coverage, just choosing to change. Also, if you do have IVF coverage, how much does it cover? Any insurance I change to will cost more than what I currently have, so I don't want to pay much higher premiums just to save a little. This is all hard enough without the financial part. Thanks!

@PurplePumps: @winter_wonder: @agold: thanks ladies! We transferred two day 3 embryos today...one 7 cell and one 8 cell. She said they looked excellent, but hard to believe since we froze on day 3 because they looked "average at best". Maybe they just tell everyone they look excellent to reduce stress! No bed rest ordered, but taking it easy today. Fx that at least one decides to stick around!!

@AmeliaBedilia: I have blue cross blue shield and have coverage. For me, there is a lifetime limit of like 25,000.

It was really great when we were doing IUIs and Ivf. It didn't cover anything for our egg donor, but that's not uncommon.

I feel like it's definitely worth it to switch plans if you can.

Eta: can you sit down with hr at work? Or, ask your clinic's financial department about a specific plan? My clinic's financial person was amazing about letting us know what would and would not be covered

@AmeliaBedilia: Do you know if the new plan has infertility coverage? We might switch to my husband's in 2016, but neither his nor mine have any coverage. whomp whomp

@bloved: I'm sure the embryos did really look great! I'm wishing you all the best. Are you trying for your first child? And do you have any other embryos remaining?

@AmeliaBedilia: I have UHC and have a 7500 lifetime max. I get around this by jumping around on different UHC plans that my company offers. Everytime I change plan type, I get a new member id and am considered a "new" member and get that max again. But that only works if you're willing to wait until a new year for a treatment cycle. (It's worked out for my since my first IVF cycle happen to be in Sept so waiting a few months wasn't so bad. Then I did 2 and 3 this year, and had to pay for one OOP, but will wait until next year to do round 4 so I can get 7500 covered again).

@bloved: 7 and 8 cell sounds perfect for day 3!

@winter_wonder: WOW, 25k sounds awesome. I know some BCBS plans have 6 ivf cycles covered in their policy too.

    Thanks everyone!
@agold: we have a son from Ivf 2 years ago. We had 2 failed transfers since and our last Ivf was a freeze-all. From that, we have the 2 we used today and 3 more frozen. Really hoping we don't need those frozen ones!
@AmeliaBedilia: my old bcbs insurance covered everything 100% after co-pays and up to 4 ivfs in a lifetime. Needless to say, that was awesome. We currently have new insurance that covers 80% up to 15k after a deductible. Even that has been very helpful!

Hi ladies! I'm not going through IVF quite yet, but thought I would join in. We have a DD from an FET in 2012 but haven't had luck trying for #2 (3 FETS - 2 chemicals, 1 failed). So we think we will be doing a fresh round again. Still in the consult phase with new docs since we moved. Some initial bloodwork for me came back with some autoimmune issues, so we retested and I should get the results this week.

I did have a question about insurance though… we are in MA, but my DHs insurance does not cover infertility treatment (loophole in the state mandate because HR is based in Colorado). So I just realized that I should consider buying my own insurance off of the healthcare marketplace for 2016 and that way I would have IF coverage. Has anyone thought about doing this? Or does anyone have any advice on this issue? Thanks!

@winter_wonder: Thanks hun. I had a breakdown yesterday cause I just found out my doctors office won the battle with my insurance company. They had originally just written off ICSI, but now they will have to "cover it", but I already hit my max, so anything they can't discount is on me... so Im looking at paying another 4-5k I wasn't counting on having to pay.

@GreenThumb: I'm curious about this as well! Would it be secondary insurance? Or would you opt out of yours for another plan completely? I looked into it as secondary insurance but couldn't find much on it.. or any good plans.

@bloved: That's great you have some frozen ones left over. Just in case.

@GreenThumb: I really hope your second round of bloodwork comes back all clear. Would the autoimmune issues present a big challenge for you if you do in fact have them? As for insurance, I'm no help at all in that area. Good luck!

AFM, I just worked up the nerve to tell my work, in as vague of a way as possible, at my upcoming IVF and I was able to get off of a work project that was around the time I would be doing the IVF. Woo hoo! Is anyone else worried about work-related things while planning to do your IVF? I was so worried about it.

@PurplePumps: Ugh....I'm sorry. As if infertility isn't stressful enough......then the financial crap. It's just ridiculous

I figured out that there isn't much benefit to canceling my health insurance through work- they put money in my HSA that is almost as much as it costs me. It's not a great plan, but it doesn't cost much. Could I find an exchange plan that has good IVF coverage and have both?

I'm so worried about doing IVF and not getting enough eggs. What are people's thoughts on royal jelly? I started it months ago, and just bought a new jar, right before I read It Starts With The Egg. She says there is no benefit and can affect hormones. I had it on my list of meds with the RE who didn't tell me to stop it (he did tell me to stop the primrose oil). I've started melatonin, vitamin D, and DHEA since finding out my AMH is low. I started l-arginine but plan on stopping it after reading the book.

In other news, my RE office called to remind me of my IUI tomorrow- like I'd forget. I'm nervous since it isn't first one, but I'm trying to relax and just trust my RE.

@agold: I had a lot of the same worried with work, and I am a private person so I dreaded telling my boss, but it did make things so much better when I let my boss know. I am glad you got out of the stressful project.

@AmeliaBedilia: I did royal jelly but stopped before the ivf. I only wanted to do the stuff the RE recommended. However, I am on another infertility board and a lot of the women there use coq10. I am not even sure what it is, but something I was thinking of looking into if this cycle does not work.
@GreenThumb: good luck with the new docs/ new cycle.

  38. AmeliaBedilia

    nectarine / 2192 posts

@bloved: I've read a lot that coq10 improves egg quality. The other biggies I've found are melatonin and DHEA. Also, vitamin D if you're even a little low.

  39. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@AmeliaBedilia: I had never heard about melatonin being used for fertility purposes. Did your doctor tell you about it? I take a half of a melatonin every so often to help me sleep. I'll start taking it every night now! How much do you take and how often? Also, best of luck with your IUI. Where you doing injectible meds or something else?

@bloved: I'm glad I'm not the only one who was worrying about work. My RE has very early morning ultrasound appointments so I'm not worried about missing too much work. I was just worried about being distracted and stressed. My boss avoided eye contact with me when I was telling him I was having a procedure. I'm sure he suspected female issues. Also, I take coq10 along with my prenatal and DHA. I also take a maca pill. My RE is okay with these.
