IVF w/ Fresh Embryo Transfer

@agold: It's 2 girls, which is definitely hard to tell from the pic! I honestly went by my dr's recommendation and did a fresh transfer. He knew my history and situation and along with his knowledge and success rate I trusted his expertise. Had it not been successful, the next step would have been a FET with embryos from that cycle. We did transfer 2 embryos which for us was an easy decision since we had been trying so long and were not opposed to twins. I know I'm obviously not any help in the fresh vs FET area, I'm sorry! I know the ladies here are a lot more knowledgable and can hopefully offer some wisdom and experience. And of course feel free to ask any other questions

@FliegepilzHut: I'm so glad you find this thread interesting! All of the responses I have received have been so very helpful and gave me even more to consider than what I'd originally anticipated when I posted my original question. Congrats on your baby boy. Boys are fun. So did you do a mock cycle before you did your first egg retreival and fresh cycle? Have you just had one egg retrieval procedure? And how many eggs were retreived when you said you were feeling fine after the retrieval? And oh darn, you mentioned the progesterone shots. Yikes. When my sister was doing IVFs, I often helped her out by giving her the intramuscular back shots when her husband was out of town. It was horrible for me to, and probably even more horrible for her to receive! Oh my gosh, poor girl. Now poor me! I don't want to do the back shots!! ugh. And to answer your question, I am 32.

@Caly: You are a great help! Thank you for your input. And two girls... that's so very sweet. I generally just want to follow my doctor's reccomendation also, but here what he is recommended is just so much more money than what I'd "wanted" to spend. (I don't want to be spending any of this money for this, just to clarify..) And I'm okay with transferring two embryos as well. I want to give myself a good chance of getting pregnant and I suppose I'd be fine with twins as well. Did you feel pysically okay after your egg retreival as you went in for the fresh embyro transfer? Thank you, again, for your input.

@agold: I agree with you, spending money to get pregnant is definitely not something anyone wants to do, especially when everyone around is doing it for free! I'm trying to remember how I felt after the retrieval into the transfer...I remember being extremely bloated, very full and overall my stomach was very tender and sore. I also remember some cramping. It was pretty uncomfortable but it got better after a couple weeks. Other than the discomfort, I felt fine going into the transfer. Did I see you were an egg donor in the past? (that's awesome btw ) After all the meds and the retrieval, how did you feel? I imagine however you felt then would be similar to how you would be feeling physically going into a fresh transfer.

@agold: The mock transfer usually takes place a month or so before a transfer (my RE did it at the same time as an SHG/saline sonogram)...unless you're referring to something different? We did one both times and my understanding is that it's just to help the actual transfer go completely smoothly (they're "mapping" your cervix). We only did one retrieval and got 17 eggs, all from one ovary-- which was a surprise: apparently I have one non-functioning ovary?!-- 14 fertilized, half were ICSI. Thank you for the well wishes! We're excited to meet him! And yeah, the PIO is rough at first...but it does eventually get easier. By the end, I was giving them to myself! (BTW-- I was 33 last year when I was doing my fresh cycle. )

ETA: One thing you might want to talk with your doctor about is the risk of monozygotic/identical twinning with IVF. It's only 1-3%, but there are at least a couple of Bees who have experienced it firsthand...

@Caly: Thanks again for your response! Its been so helpful to talk to everyone here. I just left a message for my nurse at the RE saying I wanted to do traditional IVF with the fresh transfer and asking if the doctor is cool with that (since he suggested doing FET only.) Yes, I was an egg donor about four years ago. I did feel horrible, so that's why I'm wondering how a fresh embryo transfer would go five days after the retrieval. One girl who posted here a few days ago said her sister's fresh embryo transfer was cancelled, and I'm wondering if that would happen to me. (Clearly, no sense in wondering/worrying about the future, but I'm just doing it anyways.) Before the egg retrieval I did years ago, I was extremely uncomfortable. That's almost an understatement. And then after the retrieval, I felt physically awful. I puffed all up and worked myself into hysterics. Maybe I was just being dramatic. The doctor said my ovaries were leaking protein and I was told to drink a ton of muscle milk. (Does that sound normal?) I can't remember when it all settled down, but I did go to my work christmas party a few nights later. I remember feeling, um, fragile and ill, but I still went to the party so maybe it wasn't that bad. I really wish I didn't know what an egg retrieval felt like, because its been causing me to drag my feet about my own IVF. But I'm so excited to be moving forward anyways. I just want a baby!

@FliegepilzHut: Thanks again for your response! For some reason, I was thinking that a mock transfer only happened before a FET. So I'm going to add this to my new list of questions for my doctor. 17 eggs seems like a great number! With 14 fertilized, does that mean you still have 10 frozen? Thanks for letting me know the PIO gets easier. I can't believe you were doing it yourself! You are truly amazing. And yes, I did ask my RE about an embryo splitting. Thank you so much for giving me good things to think about.

@agold: No, I may have elaborated on another thread, but in spite of those numbers, and lots of good candidates on Day#3, only 5 were still "quality" enough to be transferred or frozen on Day#5/6. We have 1 frostie left. Just curious, but do remember your numbers from your cycle as a donor?

@FliegepilzHut: Five quality embryos is a great number, right? I just had to call my sister to get this information, so luckily she remembers. Something around 20 eggs, and six made it to grade A five day blastocyst. She did two for the fresh cycle, which was good, and then froze four. But neither FET worked out.

@agold: Anecdotally, it seems like 5 or more happy blastocysts is pretty good! Grades were never mentioned, but I was told that all of the blasts (2 fresh, 2 frozen) we transferred were "perfect."

@FliegepilzHut: I'm happy to hear that 5 or more is a good number. And "perfect" sounds perfect enough for me!
