When I was little we learned through 12.

I only learned up to 10 so I'm terrible at 12x. Do kids even learn times tables anymore with new math?

Our state standards say kids are expected to know up to 12 starting in 3rd grade.

I had to learn my 12s but not with the numeracy foundation I teach now which makes it much easier for kids imo.

@808love: The fact that people don't know that is exactly what I mean. Common core is supposed to help kids understand the why behind math and multiple ways to get to the answer so they can find the one that works best for them.

@Mrs. Lion: @808love: We teach it that way. Understanding tens is key. But Mentally when he said 12x7, I did 12x3 is 36. 36 twice is 72 and then 12 more. Haha. Way to make mental math complicated! But as I teach my kids, there are many routes to an answer.

So many ways to do a problem. This is what my class spends so much time discussing while correcting (before and after common core came along.) There is no longer one right and wrong with many of math explanations but we do talk about what is more efficient.
Yet Another way to do 12 x7 ...12x5 (like the clock) plus 12x2= 60+24=84.
Lol! I can do this all day. At least I'm good for something!

I personally don't think memorizing the times tables is the way to go. Instead, the process of how to get to the answer is more beneficial. When I hear someone say 12 times 7, I automatically put the 7 below the 12 and multiply it out in my head (7*2 is 14, leave the 4, carry the 1, 7*1 is 7, plus the carried 1 is 8, 84 is the answer. I also love teaching to break the multiplication down like others have mentioned. By tens and what's left over, Etc. Memorizing is rough... It won't last forever. But truly understanding the method can stick.

@Jess1483: 2nd grade? I moved a lot as a kid, and have a fairly clear memory of working on times tables at the house we lived in during 6th and 7th grade. And even if I'm wrong on that, I'm 100% sure my ex-stepdad helped me with it and my mom didn't meet him till after 2nd for sure. ETA- I was in advanced math classes by 8th, so surely I'm remembering wrong. But I honestly don't think it was earlier than 5th when I had to have them outright memorized. We learned them before that, but didn't memorize.

@Torchwood: we don't even teach the concept of multiplication until 3rd.

Here's a fun trick for the 11s.....

Everyone knows through 10 probably....but beyond 10....

11 x 12 = 132 (split the digits of 12 and put their sum in the middle)

11 x 25 = 275

11 x 18 = 198

@mrbee: it was hard but it also helped develop my interest in maths and made me good with numbers and I rarely use calculator.

@mrbee: we learned up to 12s. I still forget 7x pretty much everything, but I can do 12x11 by memory. It's pretty useful.

@meadow: I was just playing around with this trick and it is a bit interesting in some scenarios!
11*19=209 --> when the digits added together equal higher than ten, you can't just stick it in the middle. Split the 19 but use the middle spot as a zero and then add the number to the first two digits. 109 plus 10 to the 10 is 209
11*29=319 --> 209 plus 11 to the 20 is 319.
A little complicated but still works. Sorry I'm rambling I just found it interesting haha.

Also I take back a bit of what I said yesterday. I do believe breaking it down and understanding the method is essential, but I can't deny that memorizing is also an essential skill, especially when speed is necessary. So I would say memorizing up to 12s is super helpful but also understanding the how and why is necessary.

So there is this doubling and half method with numbers that end in 5 multiplied by an even number. For example 35x18, first number is doubled and second one is halved. 70x9=630. I just learned that mental math way this year!!
