A note was sent home yesterday from school that someone in the class had lice. I know who the girl is because the grandma told us she had it Thursday...I'm a little nervous since I've never had to deal with this before. What are the odds that it won't make it's way around the class, and is there anything that can be done to prevent it...or is it a wait and see approach?

I would treat as if she had lice. This is what we did:
- Shampooed with non-toxic lice shampoo (from grocery store), combed out the nits.
- Went to Target and bought coconut oil and So Cozy Tea Tree Oil Shampoo (it's pricy, about $14). Used that to make a hair mask, left it in for about 15 minutes, and then combed out the rest of the nits. This is what worked.
- Vacuum everything. Bag up all stuffed toys and set in garage for a week. Wash all clothes, bedding, car seats, etc.
- Wiped down mattress, car seats (in car, not child seats), crib/bed with Lysol wipes.Make sure you get a good metal nit comb. The plastic ones don't do anything and they actually hurt worse. Since she has dark hair, it will be easier to see the nits on her hair if she has them.
ETA: They don't recommend using the nit poison that comes with the shampoo kit.

Ive also heard for girls, wear their hair up in a pony tail and/or bun and spray down with as much hair spray as you can.

@Bao: I would. There was a lice outbreak at H's school about a week before we found it in her hair. It was in a different room from hers but she got it anyway from one of the siblings. I'd rather get on top of it beforehand than have to do it at the last minute.
ETA: Try the tea tree shampoo/coconut oil mask. Make it seem kind of fun. The nits just slid right out. Your daughter might not have it, but it's a good preventative.

We went through this a few months back and thankfully DS didn't end up getting it. It was in the class next to his and one of the girls in his class ended up getting it but her mom pulled her out of school that week. They were diligent about keeping the kids things in separate bags, etc. Cleaned regularly and did head checks. We kept an eye out at home, kept up with our usual routine, etc. If we're ever in the situation again, I might step it up and use the shampoo as a precaution.

Xander's had lice scares at daycare twice now and hasn't gotten it. Both times it was a kid in his class that had it. What they've done to help facilitate the issue is they would bag up ALL the kids stuff to bring home to wash (normal sheets and blankets, but also their jackets, boots, etc). Anything I could wash, I would, and anything that couldn't be washed, I threw in the dryer or kept in a sealed bag for a week. I've never had to do the extra shampooing/treating for lice.

@Bao: a child in my daughter's class had it a few months ago. The school sanitized the room and I sent her with her hair up for a few days. She didn't get it.
