Did anyone lose weight and then was able to conceive? My mom thinks my infertility is because I need to lose weight, but I've seen plenty of pregnant people bigger than me. I don't want to get my hopes up that I'll be magically cured once I lose weight and still be infertile.

Has your Dr. recommended it? I think the Dr. will know if weight is hindering chances of getting pregnant - but from seeing episodes of "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant," it's often hard to believe being overweight is a main factor! But what do I know. lol!

@shopaholic: my doctor hasnt ever brought up weight. I mean I never asked if he thought that would help but he didn't come right out and call me a fattie. Ya I hope I'm one of those cases from I didn't know I was pregnant lol.

If you are insulin resistant, losing even 5 kilograms can help with fertility, but not all overweight people are insulin-resistant. I've removed most of the processed food (or non-food as the case may be) as this can also help with insulin resistance, but I'm not focusing so much on the weight side of it.

I had a friend who did two rounds of IVF and she thinks part of the reason the second was successful was due to the fact she'd lost about twenty pounds.
I guess it never hurts to be at a healthy weight as part of overall health!

Not being at a healthy weight may factor into fertility problems. Being either overweight or underweight may be an issue.
It doesn't hurt to give it a try, right? Being at a healthy weight is always a good thing.

I couldn't get pregnant when I was at my lowest weight. When I gained 5 lbs, I got pregnant.

Yeah, losing a little bit of weight can change your insulin profile and help. MAYBE. I'd give it a try, certainly, but don't hang all your hopes on it. Some crazy skinny people can't get pregnant, Posh Spice has 4 kids. Some overweight people can't get pregnant, most seem to manage it just fine. Total crapshoot.

I have PCOS and I wasn't ovulating on my own until I lost weight. Once I lost weight I started ovulating without medication. My progesterone levels were still low and I had a hard time holding a pregnancy even at my healthy, low (for me) weight but I was able to get pregnant multiple times.

I was heavy when we conceived Lo. We actually stopped trying and the lack of stress helped a lot

Similar to @Running Elley I had pcos and wasnt ovulating and had insulin resistancy.
my doctor said the best way to improve fertility naturally would be to lose weight. -
Yes, it worked immediately for me! I went to the doctor after 9 months of no luck, she recommended losing weight- that it was causing symptoms similar PCOS and delaying ovulation. I started working out and eating better and got pregnant the next month after losing between 5-10lbs.
In addition, my job got much less stressful around that time, and we went on vacation to take a break from real life.

Ditto to what everyone says. I dropped maybe 10 pounds right before I got pregnant. I was also having PCOS symptoms. And I've noticed now they're abating again now that I'm eating a little better.

@anonysquire: I was at the upper end of a normal BMI pre wedding. I have PCOS and had long irregular cycles. I went on a very low carb/calorie diet before the wedding and lost a lot of weight very quickly (not advised, I know).
While I was on the diet and immediately following my wedding, I had normal 28 days cycles which were totally unheard of before! The next month we pulled the goalie and conceived first try.
I totally think loosing weight had something to do with it for me. Now I am 20 weeks pregnant and just back up to the weight I was when I started the diet. So, I (hopefully) will have a lower pregnancy weight gain than if I hadn't done the diet.
What I am trying to say is I don't think it will do you any harm and it will mean that you are starting your pregnancy at a lower weight when you do conceive.

I was close to 200 pounds when I was TTC my son. It took 3 years of trying and a few cycles of clomid to get my ovaries to pop an egg out. I was going almost a year at a time with a period.
Since having him, I lost quite a bit of weight, and have remarried. I'm currently with 33 weeks with a baby that we were not careful about preventing. (But we're very happy to be having). I was actually shocked to have an "oops" baby.

Have you had testing done that suggests PCOS? That might be a better indicator of whether your weight is a factor than anything we could guess. Like others have said, some people can be at one end of the range and have no problem, while others are affected hormonally.

Yes but I weighed 340. I got myself down to 212 and was able to get pregnant.

I don't think weight is a factor unless you are seriously overweight. Being slimmer may make your pregnancy easier but it isn't a magic cure all for TTC.

I actually gained weight before getting pregnant. Not an ideal situation because you obviously don't want to be overweight and pregnant.... But that's just how it happened for me.

hm... I think it's just one of those things that moms say. Moms always tend to give silly advice with no scientific or logical reasoning. I was overweight and got pregnant the first month NTNP. I've had a healthy, safe pregnancy. I could imagine that being 400 pounds could affect your fertility, but just overweight... no.

For me, my doctor has suggested losing 15-20 pounds before TTC. She thinks that it will help increase my chances of keeping a pregnancy, as overweight people tend to have more hormone balance problems during pregnancy (i.e. progesterone, more likely for GD, etc). I have lost 12 so far, and would like to lose another 20, but I know that I can also safely lose weight while pregnant (my doctor said so and would help me), but I'm pretty fluffy. If you are not significantly overweight (like 30 pounds and above) I would say that your weight is not making a huge impact on your attempts. If you are concerned about it, I would definitely bring it up with your doc!

@anonysquire: Girl, are you sure she didn't mean you have to eat more fat? Seriously, I think you're fine. Doctors will only comment if you're clinically obese or close to it since it affects fertility (being underweight is also an issue).
This sounds cliche and I used to roll my eyes when ppl mentioned it, but stress plays a role. Just try to not think of TTC and have fun. (It took us 11 cycles, so yeh, I know how hard it can be to "have fun" on a strict schedule!)

One last thing. I wish I tried the Clearblue Fertility Monitor earlier! Turned out I was ovulating later than I thought and it took awhile before FF caught it and all my blood tests would show low progesterone and that I never ovulated, but I know I did.
The cycle right before my BFP, I bought the following and had an HSG (ink test) scheduled.

Maca Capsules
Evening Primrose Oil CapsulesBut right before I received any of it, I got a BFP. Things I was on were: Pre-Seed and I had honey daily (on tea or just warm water with lemon). I noticed more EWM with just honey.

@Crumbs: What do I do with the honey and cinnamon? Ahhh and what do I do with the Maca and evening primrose oil capsules? How do you take them and how much? Also we have been using preseed a couple months ago but did not use it this month. Maybe next cycle.

So, just like some people can be overweight and not have any signs that if is unhealthy for them (high blood pressure, etc), there are plenty of overweight people who can get pregnant no problem. But there are people where even 10 pounds throw their hormones off. Carrying extra weight can have an unforeseen domino effect on the other systems in your body-you just never know how the extra weight is affecting you sometimes. It certainly can't hurt to lose a few extra. And eating healthy will certainly optimize all those systems, not to mention make you more confident if you're already unhappy with it
I'm not like obese, just not where I want to be.
