Male infertility...

Well, I am just in shock and so upset. My DH had his SA done. The doctor himself called him today and said his sperm count and motility were all REALLY REALLY low. The doctor actually asked him "have you ever had surgery down there or anything?" I don't have the actual numbers. DH is pretty upset.

The clinic is going to re-do the SA next week and see how it looks. But I think this shows our problem.

I am just sick.... and trying to be supportive because DH is being hard enough on himself about this... anyone have any successful experiences with this?

He needs a second SA before they get concerned. Poor numbers can mean poor collection. Make sure he abstains the same amount of time as the first, (between 2 and 7 days). Having had surgery in the area of the groin or scrotum (think hernia repairs, etc.) can cause obstruction. But he HAS sperm, which is potentially light years better than NO sperm.

I should say, he HASN'T had any surgery there. The doctor just asked him if he had. Thank you! That makes me feel better.

@MrsADS: Also, make sure they are analyzing the sample as soon as they get it. Motility will decrease within about an hour and a half, so lab error could cause bad numbers too!

I'm so sorry. I agree with Espion that a 2nd SA will give you a clearer picture. Worst case scenario, there's still hope!

My DH has 2 (two) sperm in his first SA. His urologist diagnosed him with testicular failure and low testosterone. He was put on Clomid for 3 months to increase testosterone production and hopefully sperm. His testosterone went up, but he still had barely any sperm.

He ended up having a testicular sperm extraction (TESE) surgery and they found plenty of sperm to do IVF. It wasn't cheap, but I'm now 9 weeks pregnant after my first IVF cycle.

I highly recommend he see a urologist specializing in infertility if the next SA confirms an issue. Good luck

I echo @macintosh:, find a urologist who does fertility if his second SA is abnormal. They are WAY more knowledgeable, especially if they are fellowship trained. Most urology residencies don't focus very much on fertility, and male factor fertility can be as nuanced as female factor. Someone who knows what they are doing can save a lot of expense and intervention or time to intervention.

I pushed my sweetie to go in for an SA so we could move promptly to donor sperm if there were any male factors at play. I have endo, and I was miserable cycling -- I didn't want anything besides my own troubles delaying conception.

Sweetie got back an across the board poor SA, but, I actually got pregnant between when he went in for it and when we got the detailed results.

So, even with a poor SA, it can happen. There may also be interventions that can improve his count or bypass count issues. Or you can always do donor sperm if that's something that would work for your family.

Thanks everyone. He is going for the repeat SA next week so I will cross my fingers for some improvement. He said he is trying not to think about it until then so I'm trying not to talk about it.

But to be completely honest, inside I'm so so sad and worried Trying not to think about it too much.

We are also dealing with low sperm count. I know the fear you have. Hubby's urologist recommended a sperm fragmentation test and luckily his result was within the normal range so fertilization should be possible. But there's nothing they can do for him and its so frustrating. Its just something he was born with. His FSH is high that's all we know. Hopefully our 2nd ivf will be successful.

Ive seen some women posting about TESE being successful so maybe that could be a last resort?

my hubby was diagnosed with Azoospermia - Zero sperm count. I was devastated when I heard the news. had to hold back my tears at the docs office. Believe me when I say 2 sperm are better than zero sperm. It only takes 1. Miracles are possible - A friend of mine and her DH had 0 chance of conception as they both had problems - after 1 failed IVF they just found out they are pregnant NATURALLY - Miracles happen when you least expect them. Stay positive and dont loose the faith.
