I'll post a whole birth story soon but short version- baby Foodnerd is a girl! Born Monday and we are doing well. She has a touch of jaundice that the ped is watching but right now we are just making sure she eats and poops a lot. At our appt today I mentions a reddish area on my right breast and she said it looks liked mastitis starting and to have my midwife call in an antibiotic ASAP. When I called the midwife she advised waiting since its just red and slightly tender but no fever, aches, etc., and to just feed baby as much as possible.
So two real questions here. 1) how would you deal with the conflicting advice? I prefer natural, avoiding meds whenever possible, but also want to do everything in my power to make breast feeding happen. 2) how do I get her to eat more? She's 4 days old and tends to cluster feed- 10-15 minutes on, with rubbing her feet, blowing in her face, to keep her up, break, repeat, for up to 2.5 hours but my breasts don't feel empty still. Milk is still coming in I'm sure but there's plenty in there for her now I think.
I'm happy things are going well so far but I really want to avoid full blown mastitis and kick this jaundice thing ASAP!
