If you had a med free birth, how did you deliver your placenta? Did you get any drugs for that?

I didn't feel the placenta delivery but DH said the doctor reached in and grabbed it. I didn't feel it because they kept pushing on my stomach like they do and that was hurting me a lot.

I can't remember delivering the placenta, but they gave me pitocin to help my uterus contract and shrink. I was really upset about that. And my feet and ankles were painfully swollen for a week because of that. The alternative was for them to massage my stomach for hours. Not sure what I'd do if I could relive that, as the little stomach massage they did do hurt!

Nope - I didn't feel the placenta at all and never even got to see it!

@pregnantbee: I don't think they have to massage your uterus for hours? I was at my friends med free home birth, and they massaged her uterus for maybe 10-15 minutes? After that though they pretty much left her alone to nurse

WIth my girls, I delivered within 15 minutes of delivering baby. Both times I got Pitocin (I had been getting it with #1 already) to help prevent hemorrhage. It is something I am fine with since there is very little risk for the amount of complications it prevents. They also did fundal massage for quit a while and then they do it every few hours the first day or so.
I really felt the urge to push when the placenta was ready to be delivered with #2, I did not feel that with #1. It kind of slipped out on its own.

No drugs to deliver the placenta. I barely felt it but they were pushing on my uterus like crazy. That part hurt! They were really pushy with wanting to give me pitocin after delivery but I stuck to my guns and refused.

I had to push it out but it wasn't any big deal. I was focused on my son lying on my chest so it didn't really distract me. I received pitocin after everything to help my uterus contract back down but nothing during or before.

@MrsBrewer: Hmm. They gave me the pitocin before I really knew what was going on. After, I asked my doula about it, and she said the massage would have been much more extensive if I didn't have the pit. If there's any way I could avoid it if we have a 2nd LO, I'd consider it, as I was so swollen and uncomfortable after.

Nope, I just remember my doctor saying "okay here comes the afterbirth" and then looking at the placenta and being like "wowwww!!"

They massaged my uterus for like, 5 minutes maybe? And then the dr. had me do one more push and it was out.
It actually felt good to deliver the placenta- like, "whoosh, finally DONE!". It definitely didn't hurt at all.

Just pushed it out. They offered me a shot, but I decided to try it myself first... Took me maybe 15 minutes, because I was too distracted by my beautiful new baby to concentrate on pushing they did some massaging on my stomach to help and like @Pink Champagne: said, it felt pretty good... slippery almost! Lol

I don't even remember delivering the placenta, I think it just came out, or if I pushed, I didn't have to think about it it just slid right out. After getting baby girl out, the placenta was a piece of cake!

They stuck me in my leg with oxytocin injection almost as soon as I gave birth: standard practice here.

Didn't need pain meds for the placenta delivery. I've never heard of that! All I know is I was probably still on high from giving birth so fast and finding out the gender.
and not a pain med, but since pitocin after birth is being discussed... I had a lot of gushing/bleeding after birth that could've spiraled down to pp hemorrhage. the gushing didn't stop with fundal massages, my blood pressure started to go down (80s/40s) and I was shivering. I had just arrived at the hospital at 9.5cm dilated so there was no time for an IV, so once the bleeding became an issue, I was okay with getting pitocin via injection to stop it. Baby was out and I needed it! It is fairly common that docs give it prophylactically after birth.

@pregnantbee: Yeah, it doesn't have to be done for hours. A few minutes until the placenta comes out will do, and breastfeeding also helps the uterus to contract.
They may come in every few hours and feel your abdomen to make sure it's still contracting, and if it isn't, give it a little more massage.
Usually breastfeeding is all it takes, it's nature's built in way to contract the uterus without intervention needed.
