My doctors office just posted this article. I had this breast pump and I remember it taking several sessions to get a 4 Oz bag. I thought it was just me! I'm glad to see that they are getting rid of it, I hope they replace it with a better one!

Hey, I had supply issues the entire time and used this pump.
I started with a hospital grade Symphony, though, so I can't completely blame that pump. My body just didn't like making milk.

So this is the PISA right? My bag is black on the outside... Are all the models with tan bags?

Interesting! I'll have to look at my model number, but this looks just like mine except mine came in a black bag like @snowjewelz.

I have this one and am using it again with ds2! I swear the suction on this better than my freestyle sometimes! Weird, I guess I'm the anomaly!

@snowjewelz: it's a generic PISA that Medela sends out as their "insurance" pump.

This is the one I got (complete with the ugly tan bag) through insurance and I hated it. My friends who bought a higher end model had much more success with pumping. I hope there's something better available next time around!

@mrsjyw: I mean, I got it through insurance too! And I did have supply issues and ended up weaning early! But I wouldn't attribute it 100% to the pump.. B/c I have a back up Aveda one and they pump out about the same I think??
So disappointing to hear this though. I'm going Spectra next time!

I had both this pump and a hospital grade pump that my friend loaned me. I HATED this pump. It was useless. I used it maybe five times and then it collected dust. I spent months and months hand expressing milk at home because it was more productive than using this thing. (I kept the hospital grade pump at work since I pumped there 3 times per day versus once in the morning at home.)
So frustrating. What a waste of time/money/energy.

It really frustrates me because my insurance offered me multiple options and I picked that one because they have a great reputation. They used their good name to pass off an inferior product. My insurance only offers one every three years so if I have less than a 3 year gap between children than I am stuck with this same pump.

I got a tan bag pump in style one, but it had the two phase thing so it wasn't this one. No issues for me, though I rarely pumped anyway. But this one does not have the two phase thing so I guess that's how to tell if it's the one you got.

I have 2 - one that I got through insurance and one that I got on my own pre-insurance pump days. They had the same output, I never saw the difference. Mine came in the black bag though...

I've just started using my medela insurance pump and like it so far. I only need it to last 5 more months. The 2 PISA's I purchased out of pocket with DS have lost all suction now (almost 18 months of pumping 3-4 times a day 4 days a week but still) I have lower supply this time than last time though. I had the ameda insurance pump with DS and it was completely useless hence the 2 out of pocket PISA's.

Idk - I have this one and have never gotten much. But I also rented the hospital grade symphony for a month and didn't notice much of a difference.

I always suspected they were doing this with insurance pumps. I was sure ameda did it as well since mine was shitty. I bought a PISA out of pocket (retail) and I did love the retail version.
That's really disappointing but I am glad they will be getting rid of it at least.

This is interesting. I've had two of these Medela insurance pumps, one in 2013 and one in 2015. My 2013 pump was in tan bag without the two-phase thing. I often turned the suction all the way up, but I got more milk and it was more comfortable. My 2015 pump came in black bag and has two-phases; I use lower suction, get less milk, and have more discomfort. I can't find my old pump so I can't figure out if the difference is the pump or me (I started pumping for work, 3x a day at 3 months with this pump vs. only really pumping every once in awhile and then exclusively pumping from 9-12 months with the old pump). I do know that my 2013 pump worked similarly for me to the hospital grade Symphony comparing time, output, and comfort

I wonder if this is the one I had. I made it through maybe 6 months with it, then thought my supply was failing and ended up renting a Symphony to get me through the last few months.

This insurance pump does not have the let down feature, just one phase pumping. it is the Pump In Style. If yours has the stimulation and let down phases, it's different, the Pump In Style Advanced. And yes, there is an insurance specific PISA 2 phase pump too, no word on if it is different from retail.

I got this pump through insurance and had zero problems. I got the black bag though.

This one says it doesn't have the "let down" feature.... That's how you can tell the difference.
I just got one through my insurance, but it has that feature and an extra button to encourage let down; where this does not. @LindsayInNY: @JennyG:

@hellobeeboston: Ahh, gotcha. My insurance one has the let down feature.
grapefruit / 4663 posts
I was thinking about this today and I wonder how many people use the suction at max because that's going to be the only difference with the out of pocket pisa it goes up to 245ish while the insurance its 225 say you only pump on medium you'd never notice the difference (other than the let down feature)
