I know that it depends on the hospital, season etc. So I'm just curious about personal experiences.
Was your first LO able to meet their new sibling while you were in the hospital or did they not meet until you came home with baby?
ETA: Also, how old was your oldest when the second was born?

No, he met his baby sister at home. I think him seeing me in the hospital bed might have freaked him out. And he would've thrown a hissy fit if I couldn't leave with him.

My friend had her 3rd last week and number 1 and 2 visited just hours after the birth. They are 3 and 18 months

DD did come to the hospital to meet DS. She was about 23 months old. I waited until all of the needles, IVs etc were out of me, because I didn't want to scare her. This time around, DS and DD will meet DS#2 in the hospital, but again, only after I can walk and the IVs are out and I look as close to normal as I can.

Yes, my MIL brought LO to the hospital when the baby was born in April. I had some complications and I missed their first meeting! 
She was almost 16 months old.

Yep. DD came to the hospital. She was 20 months old! And DS was born in December.

Yep, the friends he was staying with brought him in about 24 hours after she was born. He flipped out in a totally good way, he could not have grinned any bigger. He was soooooooo happy to see that we had a baby. He was 26 months at the time. Of course, he is my extremely social child with no separation anxiety, so it wasn't a big deal when they took him to leave for the night. Otherwise, it may not have been as fun (OMG, I would have lost it if he'd cried and thrown a fit about leaving) a visit.

I really hope that E is able to come to the hospital! I want him to be the first family member (other than DH and I) to meet his sister. We'd wait until they move me into a postpartum room and everyone is nice and cleaned up. She'll be born in late November. I think I'm going to google hospital policy now!

I also think that it may be just as much for me that I want this! I just know that I'm going to miss him SO much while I'm in the hospital
ETA: It looks like he'll be allowed to come! Apparently he'll be checked for fever, etc. before being able to come in and visit.

Yes! DS1 was 2.5 when DS2 was born (in January). He stayed with us the whole time except for pushing. Having him there while I was in labor kept me calm because I didn't want to scare him. He was with my mom while I pushed and met his brother very quickly. It was so important to us that he'd be able to stay.

Our hospital allows it!
I do think I may ask whatever family member that brings her to not brings her straight from daycare. Maybe at least change clothes and scrub up well first.

I honestly don't know if our hospital allows it. If I do get pregnant this month, LO would be 20 months. I don't think I'd want to bring him because he is very clingy and he might cry when he has to leave & that would KILL me.

@TurtleDoves: I'm worried about that too but E is a total daddy's boy so I'm thinking that when he has to leave DH can go with him to make it easier.

Nope! It was RSV season and I wouldn't have wanted to bring a 21 month old into the hospital anyway

DD is 26 months (2 years old) but won't be visiting the hospital when #2 arrives. She might freak out knowing I can't come home with her and we want her to be comfortable at home when she meets her new sibling.

@Rubies: That's what we were worried about because my son was going through a clingy phase at that time! We had a fun welcome party when we brought her home so it was still nice.

DD was 20 months when DS was born, and we waited until she was able to meet him before we accepted any other visitors. It was really important that DD be the first person (besides my husband and I) to meet the new baby. I had DS at 9:00 pm, so my husband brought her to the hospital the next morning and we had a few hours as a new family of four. Then my parents showed up for a quick visit and to take DD back home for lunch/naptime; DD was so excited about her grandparents, she didn't even give us a backward glance, leaving the hospital.
