I've been very lucky with breastfeeding even with "short" nipples. (With the help of a nipple shield for the first month.) LO was nine pounds at birth- maybe that's why? I had very little pain.

I've (knock wood!) been very lucky with breastfeeding, and e was a normal 7lbs 4oz at birth. There was discomfort at the beginning, but never cracked nipples or the need for soothies, etc.

DS was 8lb 14oz at birth, and we had lots of trouble. He seemed to latch ok but wasn't able to get anything from the breast till 3-4 mos old so I ended up pumping that whole time.

@bunnymommy: I wonder about your big mouth theory. I had terrible BF problems for the first 3 months or so (DS was almost 8lbs at birth) and I think it was because LO has a small mouth AND does not open very wide. Even now at almost 3 years old, if you ask him to open his mouth, you can barely see in it compared to when other kids open their mouths.

My sister had a big baby (9lbs 7oz) and she latched perfectly immediately. Her supply is what stopped them from being able to breast feed.

LO was 8 lbs 10 oz at birth, and even wtih the help of 3 seperate LC in NICU/hosptial, she was never able to latch. She was a "lazy" baby and didn't want to do the work. I ended up pumping exclusively and then switched to formula.

LO was an average 7 lbs 4 oz, but she has a big mouth. Seriously big... She gets it from DH. I think that may be why we had a pretty easy go of BFing.

@bunnymommy: that's what I think too. We even had his upper and lower frenulums clipped at 5 days old and, unfortunately, I didn't notice any difference for either of us. Time/growth was what eventually worked for us. Luckily, I managed to get through the really tough phases and went on to BF until 13 months!

DD was 9lbs 6oz at birth and was a CHAMP! The Lactation Consultant didn't believe that I wasn't having any issues as a first time mom, so I had to call her the next time DD nursed and she was so impressed she said "wow, good thing all moms aren't like you! I would be out of a job"
DS was 7lbs 13 oz, not small but not as big, and he was HORRIBLE at nursing. I had all sorts of issues. But, that was totally related to something with his mouth and sucking.

LO was a small 6 lb 7 oz and we had no trouble at all

I've only had one. DS was 8lbs, 15 oz, and, knock on wood, we haven't had any issues with BFing.

I would say that she (LGA over 9lbs) didn't have trouble. I as a new mother didn't get her in a good position for a good latch and I ended up with a very painful bloody nipple.
