why do you think your LO is a good sleeper?
Is it because of sleep training? luck of the draw? you keep them very full during the day? white noise machine?
ETA: I have to learn to stop saying mom but rather parents!

I am no expert but I think part of it is luck of the draw and the routine we created since she was about 6 weeks. Her bedtime routine has always been consistent no matter where we are and always in the same time frame. Her nap time didn't get better until I created a short, simple routine for that as well. She has always been an on demand napper but I don't know if that makes a difference.

Routine and being sticklers. We are very strict about bedtime and never co-slept. We also do not make exceptions if she is sick or when traveling. But I am sure we were also lucky that she stopped waking up at 8 weeks. We have not sleep trained and do not use white noise.

My LO isn't an amazing sleeper but he is pretty good. I think babies that STTN at a very young age are luck of the draw, but babies that become good sleepers are a result of routines and schedules. I work super hard to make sure DS is well-rested and doesn't miss naps or go to bed too late.

It has to be luck. We use white noise and we let him fuss a bit, but I think we got lucky.

Sleep-training, routine, and as @Andrea said, being hardcore about bedtime and sleep habits. Her entire evening/bedtime routine is the same every single night.
We sleep-trained at 3.5 months and still she woke twice a night but at predictable times (midnight and 4am) until 6 months. From 6-10 months, she woke once a night and from 10 months to present (13 months) she slept 12+ hours per night with no wakeups.
She goes down in her crib to sleep without a peep. Consistency and routine are key in our household.

Consistent bedtime and routine has done the trick for us. We also use a white noise machine, which seems to help.

I think she just takes after her daddy honestly we did no sleep training, didn't really have a good routine going early on, and she started sleeping 12 hours at 2 1/2 months. Now it's more like 13 hours at 13 months. We're just very very lucky!

I think it's luck of the draw, and that we fed on demand. I think she just got all of her calories during the day. She is a great sleeper just at night though. Naps are a different story...

I think we got lucky. We never sleep-trained and didn't start a routine until maybe 3 months. He has always been a sleeper(like his mommy). He usually takes 3-4 1hr naps, but we do not have him on any sort of nap schedule(and don't even know how to start one). Now we are very consistent and give him his bottle and bath every night before bed regardless. He's been sleeping through the night since about 2 months, maybe earlier. I honestly think though that we got lucky that he's such a good sleeper. I'm hoping future children we get just as 'lucky'

I think it's luck of the draw mostly. LO started sleeping through the night the day we let her co-sleep; she did a 180 sleepwise as soon as we let her sleep with us. I think eating more during the day helps too; and giving her a bottle before bed.

Second child, luck of the draw and she still eats on demand at 3 months old. Even though our son was fed on demand and he wanted to sleep next to his food all night.

I dunno! I have to think something has to do with the environment/parents.
Both kids are great sleepers (Mavrick was better seeing he was sleeping 8 hours at 6 weeks) with Sienna it's up 1 - 2x a night (usually) but she likes to sleep, regardless. I can put her in her crib awake and she will fall asleep on her own without a peep (unless her pacifier fell out)

Once she goes to sleep, she's a good sleeper. We have started using white noise and it's a huge help to getting her to stop fussing. I think what everyone said about consistency and routine is so true, though. That has to be the hardest part.

Luck of the draw and good sleep hygiene since day 1. We didn't make the same mistakes from the first time around! M. is a super-star sleeper and has been for a while now.
Never needed to sleep train and I don't really love it for our family.
But if it makes you feel better, my 2 year old is screaming in her own bed right now

I think it is luck of the draw for us! Hoping we get lucky again!

i think it is luck of the draw, but a lot is in your control if you are sticklers for routine. for us it's sleep training, routine, white noise, black out shades, early bedtimes, and being full in the daytime (for olive).

I demand to tap into this luck you all speak of, and admire the hard work of those of you who say that you honor strict bed times and schedules!

@highwire: It really helps with good sleep hygiene, even if it's hard to enforce.

We have a good sleeper now, but it came with a lot of work. To this day, if there's a crack in the curtain, the temp is slightly off, or any number of other factors, Baby Boy will wake up. I think for young babies (from what I've seen in real life) it's really luck of the draw.

Definitely luck of the draw. Then, being strict on your sleep routine and schedule. It's really inconvenient for the first couple years of their life but it's so worth it not to have overtired kids.

I think it's luck of the draw but also having a consistent routine. my daughter is 5 weeks old and has
been sleeping 8 hrs at night for the past few nights and we haven't done any kind of sleep training yet. So in her case it's just luck of the draw.
my son is a great sleeper and I think it's cuz we're
very strict about keeping his naps in tact. we always make sure he gets his afternoon naps no matter what.

@Mrs. Jacks: ha! Thanks, it sorta does in a sick way
For those that say routine & schedule. How did the 4 month sleep regression play into it?
M was really doing pretty good IMO up until a few weeks ago. Then it was all out the window. Same start of bedtime routine, night light, black out curtains, humidifier etc. even now I do the same exact thing and some nights she'll tease me with a 6 hr stretch some nights she'll be up in 2 some 3 some 1!
The only thing I can't control is the dig barking! But she was doing that when M was sleeping good!

I think it's luck of the draw, really, and also sleep habits of the parents. My husband is a restless sleeper and so is our son.
We were sticklers for routine, but it doesn't matter. My son isn't a text book sleeper and once I let go of the idea of perfect sleep, I relaxed, which made the situation better.
