Kellymom also says normal :). I basically listen to kellymom for everything.

Our LO did sleep through the night at that point but I definitely don't think it's abnormal to still have a night feeding. In my experience, many pediatricians and nurses are not breastfeeding experts. I had a Dr who was incredulous that we were still nursing many times a day and she asked me how I still made enough milk for that...uhhh wut? Lol. If you're ok feeding at night and LO's happy - just keep doing what you're doing!

At that age she would have nursed all nigh long if I'd let her. She has at least one night feeding until she was one.

Definitely! At 17 months DS still nurses at least once overnight, if not more.

My LO nursed overnight until 14 months. We then transitioned to milk and she went from nursing. 3 times a night to one 8 oz bottle. I say each child is different.

He was absolutely still having night feedings at 6 months! I'm surprised when I hear of babies that are not.

At 6 months he was nursing probably 3 times a night? I don't remember when he dropped down to 2, but he didn't drop the last feeding until he weaned (due to illness) at 15 months.

2-3 times a night at 6 months for us too! Seems pretty common!

R STTN at 12 weeks old so she didn't have a night feeding at 6 months. She was mostly BF at 12 weeks old.

Can I say this thread is also making me feel a lot better abt my LO nursing at night

My LO was still nursing 2x per night at 6 months. My pedi said that at 6 months 0-2x was normal, at 9 months 0-1x was normal, and by 12 months most babies can sleep through.

Weirdly, I heard the same thing about the 6 months thing from my optometrist. I think it may be a common misconception.

my LO didn't have a middle of the night feeding at that age, although did have a very early morning nursing--like 4.30am. in any case, i do not think an overnight feeding at that age is unusual at all.

1-3 times a night at six months. It's actually worse now (9 months) because he wakes himself up practicing gross motor skills.

@edelweiss: 4:30 was MOTN for us! DD went back to bed after that feeding. so interesting too what people count as STTN and MOTN! i think that can come into play as well in terms of misunderstandings/what's normal/abnormal.

Not sure what you mean by overnight. Xander would go to bed at 7:30 and have a dreamfeed at 9:00 p.m. and then would wake to eat at 5:00 a.m. and go back to sleep for another hour or two.

To me, he was STTN (from 9:30 p.m. - 5:00 a.m.), but maybe that's considered 2 overnight feedings??

My LO was STTN at 6 months, but I feel like everything I've read from my pediatrician's office made it seem normal for EBF babies to wake for a MOTN feeding up until 12 months. I feel like most of my sleep training books even said you could try to get your LO to STTN, but for some babies (especially EBF babies) it was normal for them to have a MOTN feeding and to just go with it.

I can't quite remember but I think he had 1-2 at that point. I think he nursed at night until he self night weaned around 9 months.

Both our girls nursed multiple times a night at that age. Usually 3+. We were also bedsharing at that age, so I was able to mostly sleep through all of them, as did the girls (a dreamfeed, basically). And Ellie was not night weaned (we never tried-- just waited on her to stop on her own) until she was 3. Lorelei still nurses once or twice per night at almost 2.5. I say if it's working for you, don't worry about it.

At 6 months she was nursing 2-3x per night on a good night. On a bad night she would wake up as often as every 2 hours but I try not to nurse every time when she does that.

LO actually STTN from 8 weeks until the 4 month regression

At six months, LO had 3-5 feedings. It was brutal. Now we are at 8 months and she is down to three feedings between 7:30-7:00. I'm just rolling with it for now.

LO woke at least once, if not 2-3 times per night at 6 months. and completely night weaned between 14 and 15 months i think? or maybe between 13 and 14, i can't remember.

@JerricaBenton: I agree, when I mentioned it to a nurse that I only ever fed DS from one side at a time, she was completely confused and asked me what happened to the milk on the other side. WTF??

Anyways, DS is 7 months and was waking 3x/night until last week when we sleep trained and he dropped to 1. We were BF until recently (lost supply) and now we're almost EFF.

J still nursed a few times through the night until 9 months. He actually started nursing a LOT more at night right before he dropped off, like 3+ times a night from 8 months and then just stopped when he hit 9 months. I felt like I'd never sleep and then I kinda missed it!

I always heard one feeding a night up until 9 months is totally appropriate! My LO dropped hers around 7 months.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: we just had my LO's 6-month appointment last week and one of the questions on the questionnaire we had to fill out was whether she STTN. I wasn't sure whether they meant the technical definition of 5+ hours or whether they just meant goes to bed in the evening, doesn't get up until morning. Either way, LO usually wakes once, occasionally twice to eat. The nurse didn't say anything about it, and the pediatrician just said that a lot of babies start sleeping longer at night as they eat more solids. That was the extent of the convo about it, so she didn't seem too taken aback or concerned about the night feeding!

Ha this thread makes me feel like E was an anomaly and our next one may not be STTN at 6 months! bottle fed formula before bed though

We were totally STTN until maybe two weeks ago, and now we have at least one overnight feeding. J is 7 months.

Not sure how she did it but she STTN. I literally didn't teach her this skill. She puts herself to bed and wakes up in the morning when she's hungry. But it really is totally normal to wake up several times still!

  34. Kemma

    grapefruit / 4291 posts

If I recall, Alexis was waking for a feed anywhere between 3am and 5am at six months of age and still wakes for a night feed at twenty months old.

As far as I'm concerned there is a whole lot of developmental stuff that goes on between six and twelve months (crawling, teeth, babbling etc) and it seems only natural for a LO to need to the calories of a night feed.

  35. Charm54

    cantaloupe / 6885 posts

She STTN very young, but I EPed and supplemented so she was bottle fed.

  36. illumina

    pomelo / 5469 posts

S didn't wake for night feeds from 8 weeks onwards. She was EBF but our equivalent of the ped told us that EBF babies shouldn't be STTN without feeds until they are a year old.

Given that, it always surprises me that in the US some peds recommend that babies don't need to eat during the night after 6 months. My friend's LO was still waking 1-2x per night at 6 months and they decided to let her CIO for all night wakings and I just thought to myself "how are you completely sure she isn't hungry?" FWIW I would have continued to feed until a year or so if she woke during the night.

LO had 2 overnight feeds until around 4 months and then dropped to one - she kept that one until she started STTN at around 10 months old. We sleep trained when she was 6 months but that didn't stop her from getting up to eat once/night for another 4 months

Wow I feel a lot better about my LOs night feeding after reading all these! He's 6 months exactly and he feeds 3 times most nights, 2 times on a good night. This is a vast improvement on a few weeks ago though when it was more like 5 - 7 times!

  39. walnutems

My DS just turned 6 months this week and he dropped his motn feeding 2 weeks ago. He was probably ready before then but I kept doing it because I heard that supply drops drastically after dropping the motn the night and that was right! We've already had to start supplementing!

@lawbee11: @birdofafeather: In that case, I think it's probably pretty normal to eat a couple times overnight at that age! Everyone I know was AMAZED that Xander was sleeping the 7+ hours at that age, so I was assuming eating even MORE than that is normal!
